View Full Version : 69 Rs Vacume Headlight Problem
breedly Apr 3rd, 08, 01:46 PM I Recieved The Vacume Diagram(thanks Again) And Plumbing Is Right. The Doors Open And Close Correctly When Moving The Override Plunger Switch On Top Of The Vacume Relay, But Won"t Work By Pulling The Headlight Switch Out. How Can I Know If The Problem Is The Vacume Relay Or The Headlight Switch? Thanks, Brad
click Apr 3rd, 08, 02:14 PM Brad, if you dont have a vacuum pump, Id suggest buying one for many projects like this. Id pull the vac hose going to the firewall off the vac tank and apply vac to that hose going inside to the switch. Then let it hold vac and check/listen for leaks near the switch. If it wont hold vac, then you have bad rubber lines going to the light switch. The switch 'could' have a leak in it too.
The override plunger on the vac tank, also could have a problem inside it, if it pulled in engine vacuum and dirt/oil etc. over the years without the inline filter. Those can be pulled apart from what others have told me, and cleaned up. Also pull all hoses off the vac canister switch and go direct to the switch with your vac and check the other bibs while working the knob on top. Even a little WD40 sprayed inside that wont hurt it. A good vac tester can also be used for other projects on your car later, its a good investment. :)
breedly Apr 3rd, 08, 05:32 PM So If I Pull A Vacuume On The Line Going Inside To The Headlight Switch And It Holds Then It Must Be The Relay Switch Right? Thanks For Your Time, Brad
click Apr 3rd, 08, 06:08 PM Yep, all circuits of Vac can be checked to see if they hold Vac. Go one at a time on all hoses. Play with it with a Vac pump and you will find it by elimination. :)
William Apr 3rd, 08, 06:14 PM The ports in the h/l switch are activated by a metal slide valve. When the engagement tab breaks off the slide it no longer moves.

Did you get it fixed?
click Apr 4th, 08, 10:28 AM He has alot to go over before he gets it fixed. He only saw the last post by William today at 830am :D lets give him a few days to report back.
ck 2 Apr 4th, 08, 12:12 PM Why doesn't he just hook the hoses together at the headlight switch and see if they open?
breedly Apr 4th, 08, 05:13 PM I Just Got A Vacuume Guage Today, I"m Going To Put A Tee In The Line Coming From The Headlight Switch To The Relay Switch And See If Vacuume Changes When I Pull The Headlight Switch Out. If There Is No Changes Then The Headlight Switch Must Not Be Doing It"s Job.
ck 2 Apr 4th, 08, 07:12 PM As I stated earlier make sure you have vacuum going to the headlight switch. If you do hook the two hoses at the headlight switch together. If the doors open you've got a headlight switch problem. If they don't open you have eliminated the headlight switch as the problem. You can also pull the headlight switch on and see if that puts vacuum on the hose going to the top of the relay.
I would do this first before I started diving deeper. I can't believe someone hasn't suggested this already. Seems easier and quicker than buying a vacuum and cutting lines and putting tee's in line to test.
However the gauge will come in handy at times. Just my 2 cents.
breedly Apr 5th, 08, 11:15 AM From The First Post I Recieved A Diagram And Information On When Vacuume Should And Should Notbe Present. It Said Vacuume Should Be Present On The Line Coming From The Headlight Switch To The Relay Switch In The Door Closed(headlight Off) Position. Which Is The Case With My Car. My Understanding Is, When I Pull H/l Switch Out, The Vacuume Should Cut Off To The Relay Switch, Mine Doen"t. So I Pinched The Line Between The H/l Switch And Relay And The Doors Opened, Which Tells Me The H?l Switch Is Not Working

You are correct. I mispoke in my above post, sorry.
With the car running and the headlights turned off, when you pull the vacuum hose off the top of the relay the headlights should open. There also should be vacuum on the hose going to the top of the relay at this time.
Then when you pull the headlights to the on position this cuts off the vacuum to that hose. There shouldn't be vacuum on this hose. I just went and checked mine and this is how mine is.
breedly Apr 5th, 08, 03:20 PM Thanks, I'm Going To Replace Thre H/l Switch And Hope That Will Do It.

I did a complete resto on my RS. And I had a heck of a time getting the switch shaft out of the switch. And that was with the dash cluster out of the car sitting on the bench. I pushed the little button that is supposed to release the shaft but it just didn't want to release. I had to tear it up to get it out. So I had to buy a new switch.
Anyway I bought a new RS switch from Ricks. They offer two different ones for an RS.
One is an import, and one is US made by the original GM manufacturer. I bought the US made one and it looks and works like the original but it's $20 more. Don't have any experience with the import.
alanrw Apr 6th, 08, 10:39 AM I had the same issue with my switch. It took like 10 minutes of jiggling to get the shaft to release.

j-haul Apr 9th, 08, 08:05 PM Well I have the ultimate of a problem with my rs switch. actually my 3rd one. When I pull the switch out for "on" the doors close and when I push it in for "off" they open. And of course I did switch the lines on the switch which creates a leaking hissing sound and no action at all from the doors. This rs set up was put on from scratch and works well, up to the switch part. Could something be crossed over on the vac lines or do I have the unbelievable bad luck of 3 bad switches in a row?
click Apr 10th, 08, 08:04 AM Put the light switch vac lines back where they worked 'wrong' but worked and just reverse the vac lines on your actuators and you should be fine. Some old diagrams had them wrong, it wont hurt anything either. By swapping the vac lines on your actuators, hopefully the hoses are long enuf, they should work fine. :)
j-haul Apr 17th, 08, 05:42 PM Changing the hoses on the cannisters was a great idea but just brought me back to the "not working" at all mode. SO just as I was about to torch the car someone pulled out the pvc line and the car ran crappy. We had a new one handy and put it in.The doors work flawless now. Thanks for advise.
