Wanted to know if there is a way to just install the main RS grill and the capsule assembly to have the apperence of hideaway lights. I have decided against making the car a RS or SS clone but the original standard grill is faded and needs to be replaced. I don't have a problem manually moving the covers when I put the lights on so is there a way to do this?

To do what you want, you are still going to need most of the conversion kit. except for the acuators and vacuum tank. Also, for a while I did not have my acuators installed and the headlight doors would not stay in one place. If I wanted them to stay open I had to tie them open. Also, if you did not know the headlights set back farther on a R/S than in a standard grill and it requires a new bracket welded in.

Hi 68rs/ss
I also have the hideaways with no actuators or vacuum tank, as far as I can see not much of anything! I have bolts which I slide up from underneath to hold the doors open. I have a couple of books on the way as I want to get them running again. As far as I could go back with her history she is a true rs/ss. Anyway was it tricky to get them running? If you have any pics or info on the install I'd be grateful for anything. This is my first so when I say I'm new I'm really new to this. Thanks

If you originally had a standard grill, you will also need a RS lower valance, so you will have front turn signals.

She is an original rs/ss so she has the lower valance and the hideaway light covers, what she is missing is the vacuum and hoses to get them going. I found a place that sells the full kit or the items separately, just wondering what the process was like and is there a particular book that helped best with the re-install.

Patrick - You can go either with original vacuum actuators or install a electric conversion kit. Both are straight forward installations.

The AIM is the best starting point to see what you have and need to make the feature functional again. You say she is an original RS/SS but also state "she is missing the vacuum and hoses" Hoses I understand missing, the vacuum I do not. Do you mean you are missing the intake manifold take off port (shared with power brakes)?

I think your first step should be to take an inventory of what is left on the car starting with that port then move forward through the path on the AIM. Next is the headlight switch. Does your current headlight switch have two "bibs" at the side for the hoses to connect to? If not you will need a new RS headlight switch, there is also a rubber grommet in the firewall for the trigger hoses to past through. Next down the line would be the vacuum storage tank on the drivers side skirt at the front. It will have a service over-ride valve mounted on top. Then next would be the door actuators cans and the door bell cranks which we already assume you do not have. Price out the missing parts and see what the bottom line is.

The electric kit would eliminate the need for the, intake manifold take off port, RS hose kit, the RS headlight switch, the vacuum tank, and service over-ride switch and the actuators. So that would be cost effective if originality is not your first concern. The electric kits from Detroit are easy to install and there are many threads here and around the other forums to get it done in a weekend. There are a few kits offered so look them up and then look at the install threads here to see which kit is the most reliable and easy to install.

But the slower vacuum system looks better then the harsh snap of the electric conversions on 68 and 69's IMHO. The vacuum system is also a straight forward installation. Hoses are color coded green, yellow, and red decent kits are available from Classic, HQ and Ricks. Also an weekender project if you have all the parts ready to roll.

One side point on vacuum systems: You will end up with a 69 hose installation kit, and a 69 service over-ride switch from Classic HQ because some of the 68 check valves are not being reproduced last check I made. This is only a issue if you are following the 68 AIM for a new installation which has the no longer produced valve in-line and also the service over-ride switch had the hoses in the reverse from what was done in 69 (69 is like a traffic light red top green bottom, 68 is reversed.) so use the RS page from the 69 AIM for a new installation if you need to do the whole system. I can shoot you those pages.
