My gas gauge stays on E (gauge cluster on console) and my fuel light is on on the speedometer. It just happened after I had someone work on my console wiring. He thinks its the fuel sending unit. I hate to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel sending unit (and possibly the fuel tank just because) if the problem is in the wiring. Any ideas how to test this?

I think the fact that this began right after the console was worked on is important here. If it is a 69, there is a connector with 2 wires right under the trunk lock. One wire is for the license light, the other is for the fuel sender wire. If you disconnect the fuel sender wire, the gauge should go to full with the key on. If you ground that same wire (upsteam side), the gauge will go to Empty.

Could very well be that something at the console gauge is accidently grounded which will give you the constant Empty reading.
