View Full Version : ? about value on '69 SS/RS L34 A/C
greg2001ls6454 Apr 6th, 08, 05:24 PM Guys,
I am considering a purchase of the following and need a realistic ballpark..
1969 SS/RS 396/350 X22 original engine/trans/rear...original cowl tag never off
auto
A/C
deluxe houndstooth (original combination)
P/W, tilt, endura, rosewood, rear defogger, am/fm, vinyl roof, p/s, gauges, door edge guards
The car is garnet red, white vinly roof, black houndstooth
The history on the car is guys dad bought it new...NO PAPERWORK of any kind, although I've known of the car over 15 years and it is legit
The car is a driver, was being cosmetically restored 15 years ago...engine/trans rebuilt, body work done, painted etc..Yet the car was never finished, nor started/driven.
The bad news the car received quarter skins when painted 15 years ago...the seams are visible where they were done..so car needs re-doing and re-painting to remove visible weld lines...
Also the car is at best an ameteur restoration..no spray can detailing, but is really a #3 car at best...It appears to be all there, and with exception of smog pump the numbers are right...but this car needs re-doing to make it even a Super Chevy quality car...
Any thoughts as to the value on something like this???
Thanks
Greg
wagonman Apr 6th, 08, 06:55 PM is all the smog pump brackets and smog manifolds on the car?
is it just missing the pump?
sounds like a really nice car...
only about 2018 camaro's had the L34 engine.......and yours has A/c and power windows? wow!!!!!
really need pics to determine a value.....
complete i would think $50-$80K maybe a little bit more........
just my thought.....

The brackets appear to be there, but the car isn't a show car and no paperwork to prove options...
I was thinking more along the line of 35-40k...given the fact no paperwork of any kind and the fact the car has to redone even for a local cruise car (the quarter seams are noticeable and since it has been siting for 15 years without being driven...might have to go back through drivetrain...) but maybe I'm low...
Put it this way..what would a national caliber car with paperwork with this combination bring??? I'm thinking 100k-115k...So I'm working backwards...
L7869 Apr 6th, 08, 08:27 PM I M O this car completely restored, documented or certified, but with out any original paperwork would be worth around $75 to $85k. So you are right work backwards, if you can buy the car for $30 or $35k and it needs $20k to redue, you got a good deal. plus you will have a great car when done.
camaromaniac Apr 6th, 08, 08:56 PM Greg,
I'm thinking we agree with your approach considering you have everything in the car to work with. You need to build in a slush fund (10 to 25%) within your estimates, especially if you are hiring out most if not all of the labor. Just make sure you have assessed the conditon correctly and accounted for any rust. The closer to $30k on the purchase, all the better.

wagonman Apr 6th, 08, 09:42 PM when i said complete i meant completely restored.......
greg2001ls6454 Apr 7th, 08, 05:07 AM thanks guys...I was figuring 40k absolutly tops, even made an offer on it at 40k to secure it..."no dice" says the owner...but was thinking in the low-mid 30's was where I should be....Unfortunatly I don't think 40k or even 50k would buy the car as the owner (the original owners son) has watched too much B&J on tv...Such a shame as this guy by his own admission won't do anything with the car and his kids could care less....
The car is in a state of being a 15 footer, but the little stuff (which adds up to re-doing the whole thing) jumps out at anyone familiar with these cars...Plus there isn't a shred of paperwork proving what the car is..so anyone would be prudent to protect their financial investment...
Just best to sit on it and when the dumbass dies buy the car from his kids for nothing....
wagonman Apr 7th, 08, 05:34 PM a complete shame!!
i have seen and heard of so many cars rot away because the owner was going to "restore it someday"
like you said has watched to much barrett jackson.......
show him these threads..the cars worth $80K tops! completely restored....its worth $40K top now!
and as the car sits it will rot away!
is the car sitting outside?
greg2001ls6454 Apr 7th, 08, 06:40 PM the car is inside and has been for the last 15 years..since it was "restored"...I was telling the owner the car sitting so long without being started, was actually detrimental, especially since he already had the drivetrain rebuilt...It might need it again for lack of use..at the least a basic teardown would need to be done...As far as the body..the car needs to be stripped (ashame as the re-paint is actually holding up well..no light exposure) and the quarter seams fixed or full quarters added...alignment is poor, original endura is old and not fitting the nose properly...probably swollen (the originals if not cared for have a tendency to swell and come apart)
The interior was redone in the correct houndstooth, but the rest is showing age...console needs replacement, gauges need restoring, etc...deluxe belt buckles are rusted in spots...rosewood wheel hub and tilt need rebuilding...Original door panels are decent with no tears but paint overspray on edges, etc...All in all just a tired looking interior except the seat covers...
It is a shame as the car would make a great cruiser..killer color combo and nice options..sort of an "executive" Camaro...
I spoke to the guy today...probably pissed him off as I told him I was in the ball park with my offer, even alittle high based on the market..He didn't take the news well..Guess if I ever make another offer I'll send someone to buy it...lol
Oh well..like I said..wait to the guy drops dead and then buy it....
cencal69 Apr 7th, 08, 07:04 PM Well we're all wishing a painless and quick death on that old s.o.b. J.k., kinda.

hmmmm.......
Unreal Apr 8th, 08, 10:30 AM I would be nice to the guy, and tell him you are very interested at the price you have given him. Ask if he should change his mind, to please call him. Or better yet, ask if he would mind if you check back with him periodically.
If he really does want to sell, others will tell him the same thing you have, and he may figure out that your offer was pretty darned good.
If not, you haven't lost anything. If it's not worth what the guy wants for it, there's not going to be any deal (I shouldn't say that, someone else who watches Barrett Jackson, may offer him more than you!)

It is definitly a neat car, but I don't have the time to play around with people who aren't serious....When I buy something I don't throw money at it til the guy says "ok"...give me a price and if we can do a deal..great..not this BS about "make me an offer..." That is how J/O's do businesss.....I figure if the guy wants to sell it, he knows per our conversations to call...It is a neat car, but it isn't something I HAVE to have...the biggest problem today when trying to buy these types of cars is the guys who were of the same mentality as what happened in the real estate market a few years ago..."If I don't buy now, for whatever price...I'll never own it..." and drove the market up...This is a great example of just that...unrealistic owner who thinks he has the "holy grail.." and basically ruins it for the hobby....I'll be willing to say unless someone just pays ridiculous money for this car..and I'm talking 65-70k as it sits...it will stay where it is...
Thanks again guys for validating my thoughts...
Unreal Apr 9th, 08, 08:41 AM OK, so you are an "Instant Gratification" kind of guy. I'm more of a "Relationship" kind of guy. Nothing wrong with either type.
I guess market value is not what is important, if you plan to "point and shoot." It's all about what you are willing to pay...which may or may not be market value.
Camullet Apr 9th, 08, 10:37 AM You've hit the nail on the head with your thoughts, and yes, this person believes that Indiana Jones is coming to unearth his/her priceless relic. What a crock...
If you've got cash, and/or can get cash on short-notice, I'd just sit and wait... Current economic conditions, coupled with gas that will be at $4/gal on the avg. over the summer means that people are going to start off-loading cars such as this. Quite honestly, my forecast says that over the next year you'll have your pick of cars (buyer's market), and maybe one that won't require restoration work.
Just be patient and wait... You'll have even more fun if you can source yourself a total bargain and have it up and going with minimal blood, sweat, and tears. Besides, your wife or significant-other will think you're smarter than everyone else...!:hurray:
