I am in the middle of restoring a numbers matching x66 L78 car. I have the numbers matching motor but the tranny and rear have both been replaced over the years. I just got the car back from paint. I never thought I would say this but the Frost Green looks amazing. My ? is - the car is originally a black vinyl top car. It looks so good right now without it what do you think I should do for resale value? I think it would complete the car pulling the black stripe and tail panel together. Just curious what you guys think about value either way. Would it affect the value of the car if I did not have the top put on?

Thanks for the help!

Pics would help. If you are going for getting it close as possible to the original look and sell it, put the vinyl top back on. I am not a vinyl top fan, but given the choice between two identical Camaros that were restored back to the original factory specs, I would choose the vinyl top car. Plus, you don't see that many good vinyl top cars around. Having said that my 67 vert was originally blue but the PO changed it to black which I like better, but I plan on keeping the car.

I personally LOVE Frost green :beers:

From what I've been reading lately, original is the only way to go on a real car but.......... how can you prove it had a vinyl ???? Unless you have some documentation leave it off

JMO of course..........

Love vinyl top cars. The top will go nicely with the tailpan and the hockey stick stripes. It will also look nice if the interior is black or dark green.

You didnt say if the chrome trim buttons were still on the roofline or not? If not, its major work to restore those to correct position. If they are still there, YES put the vinyl back on :D Im partial too

The buttons were removed by the previous owner...that is one major reason I was considering not putting a vinyl top back on. And, in response to the ? above on how do you know it is a vinyl top- it's on the trim tag.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I've had a bunch of original vinyl top Camaros and never noticed it on the tag

If its on the tag......Put it on the car. Thats what people want to see.

Bob all the trim tags carry the body color and roof color on them. If its vinyl top a different Letter appears in place of the body color number. For example, body color 50 50 means roof and body same dover white. If its 50 B it means white body and B-black vinyl top. :)

Most of the buttons or teets are put on before the car has been painted but it can still be done after. There is a small teet welder that shops use. If installing after the car has been painted, you will have to remove the paint down to metal at the exact spot the teet should go. The teet is then welded to the roof and you will have to cover the worked on area with something prior to the vinyl roof and trim.

Another way some guys do it is to attach the trim with flat hard screws and cover everything in silicone to prevent rust. This is the easiest but not what I would suggest.

Really tough call since the car is already out of paint. Sounds like you would have a lot more work to do if you wanted the vinyl back on. My 67 has a vinyl and looks great. Good luck on your decision.

Never really noticed  Thanks for the info

I have a code 79 B '69 I'm building as a pro touring / Beater car. Now I know what the B means :D

Thanks for all the input guys. As much as I would like to see the vinyl top back on the car I don't know if I want to take the chance of damaging the anything and trying to find someone that knows what they are doing so it would be done right. I guess I will leave it up to the soon to be new owner to add the top if they want it.

Once again, thanks for all the input and opinions!!!! I don't know where I'd be without this site.....completely lost for sure!
