I recently bought an aftermarket chrome bowtie gas cap for my '68. I went to install it and doesn't fit at all. It barely hangs on the filler tube. Are they all like that? Are there any other caps out there that will work with a plain jane Camaro. I have another thread here: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=131620 about a 'stock' cap that doesn't work either. I'm just trying to get a cool cap without all the hassle!

I bought a repro SS cap from Rick's. It was crooked when completely installed, and doesn't seal properly and hold pressure. I chucked it up in a vise and was able to reclock it, but it still doesn't seal properly. I'm using a new GM NOS filler neck, so I'm blaming the repop cap for both.

I had to use parts from the old, to mate with the "new".

I have one too that is a POS. I don't use it anymore. Such is life with aftermarket parts.

You talking about the locking gas cap that has the chrome bowtie in the center and black background?

Mine sucks too.

Wiggle it enough it comes off. Some locking cap. Mine does seal though, guess I'm lucky.

I put one on soon after I bought my car and it too was loose, so I tried a new filler neck and it was fine for 20,000 miles until I took the car apart. Hope this helps, RonM.

Got one too. P.O.S. Bought a repop standard gas cap. Bigger P.O.S.

I bought a new filler neck and plain jane cap...
The new cap didn't fit, but the old cap did..
For me, the problem is the repop cap, not the repop neck..

I was contemplating getting one of the repop gas caps a year ago or so and after reading all of these posts I'm glad I didn't. I wound up buying an original GM cap off of eBay (paid less than a repop, but had to touch up the black paint). It's not a simple twist on affair, but with a little fiddling it seals tight and stays on securely. You do have to 'test' it a bit to make sure the little retractable tabs have engaged the neck, but once they grab they stay in place.

I understand the repops of anything first gen Camaro are not perfect, but I am really tired of all the 'exact fit' and 'perfect match' advertising hype. With few exceptions, most of the reproduction parts I have seen or purchased are made of flimsy materials, they look like crap or they fit like crap – take your pick. I don’t care what anyone says – they are NOT just like original GM parts.

Thanks for all the responses guys. 2 of the sales idiots at a certain '_____ Classic Chevy' store in Centralia, Wa. tried to convince me that my "40 year old filler tube was worn out". I tried to convince them that they were crazy, but they weren't going for it either. Needless to say, I won't be shopping there again since they couldn't be honest with me over a $25 part and were selling junk to boot.

I'm still hoping that I can find something similar that's cool, but wouldn't look out of place on an original bare bones car. I'm being lazy and don't want to spend the time repainting an original style cap to match, but that's what it may come down to. One thing I've thought of is to take an SS or RS cap and dremel the letters off and rattle can that surface black. Subtle, cool, but easy to do and wouldn't look out of place.

I bought a repop standard cap fron C I (twice) and both times the part that hooks onto the neck broke off and fell into the tank. I had to take the tank off both times to get it out. They told me it was because my old neck was bad. However when I told them I bought the whole system from the carb to the gas cap from them it must be their filler that was bad they told me I am turning it to far. To this day they have not replaced the second one. I bought a late model cap and built my own with a 1st gen standard cap cover. Works perfect to this day, 3 years later.
