: how to remove 69 glove box lock

A friend called me and he is having trouble figuring out how to remove his glove box lock on his 69 Camaro. He has the key and it works, just can't figure how to get the lock out of the hole.
I don't have anything to even look at here. Can anyone explain to me what he should do?
Thanks, David

Thanks for the fast reply.
He says he looked at it and can't figure what holds it.
If there were a couple of screws or something, he'd be able to figure that out.
I've got a 67 I'll have to look at it. I don't know if the 69 is different.

I just looked at my 67 glove box door and the lock is held by a single screw. It couldn't be any easier.
I don't know how my friend could overlook that!
Either his is different, or he needs glasses!

I'd like to hear from someone who has a 69.
Thanks all, David

David - I looked at mine, no screw holding it and it is recessed into the door. I think it will take a tool that fits into a slot to remove the latch from the barrel. Someone on this site has to have taken one of these appart....

DJD,
Thanks for looking. I was starting to think my friend was starting to loose it. My 67 is easy, just a screw in the back side, and it slides out the front.

Well I've never had mine apart either, so I decided everything else is apart why not this? The knob on the glove box door must be removed. It just pops it off (I used a smsll screw driver to pry it off), then there is a small threaded nut (looks like a washer), once the nut is loose you simply pull out the core (have the key in, so you dont loose any of the little cogs). Should be easy to install if you have the correct key. I don't, so this will be the perfect time for me to go to the locksmith and get the correct key. Hope this helps.

Austin,
Does it have a twist type knob?
My 67 is a push button.
69 must be completely different. I've riden in his car but never paid attention to it.

So you just pry on the twist knob and then remove a nut that is behind it?

Thanks for the info. I'll pass it on, he didn't want to wreck anything. He's installing a rosewood piece over the glove box door.

David, I went through this with my 69 (only trying to install a new lock - no key for the old one). When the key is inserted, the brass colored tabs which stick out of the lock cylinder body are all retracted, however, there remains one tab (silver in color on my new lock) which is not retracted by the key. That tab locks the screw on retainer in place on the inside of the glove box door. If you depress that tab, you can then unscrew the retainer, and the lock cylinder will come out the front side of the glove box door. Hope this helps. DP.

Thanks for the info.
I'll pass it on to him. He should be able to do it now.

Yes its a turn knob on the '69. The same knob used on most GM's in the seventies and eighties. I don't have the key either and was able to just pull out the cylender once the nut was loose. I did slightly turn the cylender maybe this "triped" the silver cog (the first one is silver on mine also) or it was never snaped all the way in (it was kind of loose).

P.S. I did snap the chrome knob back on to make sure I didn't damage it. It snaped right back on.
