 I tried to pull the old 350 out today and install the ZZ383.

Warning!!! Napa Auto Parts part#615-1161 bronze pilot bushing will not fit without modifications!

The bushing fits fine on the tranny input shaft when you just slide it on. After it is installed the inside diameter is too small for the input shaft. A cold chizel and an hour later. It was out!

I tried a second one, borrowing the correct install tool. The same thing happened. I ended up reaming out the hole with slightly larger drill bit,
Now the tranny fits into the installed bushing. However it will not fit in the bushing once the clutch and bellhousing are installed. This is where I had to stop for today. ( I am using a pilot tool for the disc.)

Oh, the dust shield would also not transfer to the new motor. After sticking it in a grinder for about an hour it finally fit. The radius on the shield has to be made bigger to contour the 1 piece rear main seal block and oil pan.

It wasn't my day. I will try again tomorrow,

if you pack the pilot bushing with grease and tap in a piece of 1/2 round stock into the hole filled with grease it will pop right out in 1 minute!!!!

a 1/2 drive extention with the square drive cut off works perfect!!!

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I'm not out of the woods yet.

also are you placing the bushing in correctly?

it installs with the chamfered edge facing out toward the tranny....
when you align your clutch are you using an alignment tool?

it helps to have someone push in the clutch pedal as your pushing the tranny againsed the engine.

Another easy way to remove the bushing is to get a tap just slightly larger than the ID of the bushing. The bushing is soft so just run it in until it bottoms out against the end of the crankshaft. Remove it and run a bolt in the same hole. As the end of the bolt comes in contact with the end of the crank it will just back the bushing out.

Tranny is on. Now just waiting for friends to help with engine/tranny install. Hopefully today, but maybe not.

The grease trick has worked great for me but this tool http://springertool.com/ is the way to go. Popped out a 40 year old crusty pilot bushing with ease.

Easiest, least-messy removal method is to run a 5/8" NC tap through the bushing, then install a 5/8" NC bolt, and keep turning it when it bottoms out in the back of the crank - bushing will pop right out. No grease, no chisels, no mess.
