I am doing a cosmetic resto of my 69 Z and have the gas tank out of the car. The underside of the car has too much surface rust for my liking and will be restored with new fuel lines brake lines, painted etc. The car will also be painted of course. My car is very original and I have agonized about doing this from the beginning but it just looked to bad to leave alone. Anyway, back to the tank. I have been thinking about re-using the old tank but it looks it's age and has a nice coat of undercoating on it. Should I use it or buy a new one?

Lawrence... if you are restoring your chassis then you might as well put a new tank in it... unless it will clean up to near,y new condition.
How are you coming along on the Z? Did you find someone to paint it?
The black one is no longer for sale... gonna put PS on it an drive it.

A new tank is pretty cheap compared to other parts, its clean inside and is a one time fix. Id change it out like I did.

Heck, if you want a used tank I was just about to throw mine out. Needs to be cleaned up but you can compare it to yours and use the better. Yours for the asking.

James,

The car is a rolling shell right now. The only thing left to do is to remove the brake lines, fuel lines and heater core. Everything else is off or out of the car.
The guy who painted my Corvette is also going to paint the Z.
I was thinking about putting PS on my car too. Have you ever noticed how a Corvette manual steering is so much easier to turn than a Camaro? Why is that?

The corvettes used a power assist with the ram.. not a power steering box.

where is the date?

The date is on the front drivers corner of the tank where the top and bottom halves meet. It is readable from the bottom of the car if the tank is clean and you know what you are looking for... if it is at all dirty you won't be able to find it.

I took the sending unit out of the tank last night and checked out what the inside looked like. To my surprise the tank was very clean inside with no rust. There was a very small amount of white stuff in there. When I moved the tank around I did hear some stuff moving around. Looked inside with a flash light but could not find anything.

I am not going to throw the tank away. I still may use it.

Thanks

The gas tank on the Black car had solder inside from the filler neck...

I am with you Lawrence. I am dropping my tank this week and will clean the paint overspray off the outside, repaint the straps and resinstall if the tank has no rust inside.

My tank it out now. The top looks to be painted black. Were they orginally painted? Cleaning off the paint it looks like just mild steel and not plated.

Do you usually just clear-coat the tanks? I am getting a new tank wondering what to do about it.

I put 2 coats of POR Clear Paint, its not a poly clear coat but an actual paint that is clear. Its held up nicely

Must be for an 02D car. I decide to order a new tank. The old one has a fair amount of surface rust under the paint. Sure hate to get rid of a dated part.

Yep, I understand. I am trying to re-use everything, beyond reason sometimes.
I learned the hard way when I restored my Vette. Threw out some parts I should not have. Ended up costing me a butt load more to get the car to NCRS quality.
