Is there any place to call or go online to order custom head gaskets? Maybe not custom but rare/hard to find?
I decided not to use the .015" shim steel gaskets because I am using aluminum heads, have old gasket on the block that needs to be scraped off which could cause scratches leading to sealing problems.
I'm looking for a composition type gasket with a 4.040" minimum bore and .028" thick compressed (or lower if possible).
I have found a .028" fel pro but summit only lists it as 4.000" bore and my motor is 4.040" so that would not work.

I'd be careful of a thin gasket with cast iron to aluminum. Check with the manufacturer to see if what you choose can be used with aluminum heads. Undercut studs will help a little in the dissimilar expansion rates.

I have to believe Fel-Pro know's what they are talking about when THEY say it's OK to use their rubber coated .015" thick shim #1094's w/ aluminum heads!

So go from there!!

these should seal better than the .015" shim steel's right?
and whats the deal with "race only" should I just ignore that and buy them?

Most gaskets are listed for the "basic" bore size of the engine. They will generally easily work up to at least .060" over bores. Which Fel-Progasket number is it ??

That is the gasket.
I was scratching my head on the 4.000" bore size, I even called scummit and they said they only carried the .028" in a 4.000" bore size, they said if i provide a part # from felpro with the correct bore size i can order it through them.
Im just going to order the victor Reinz gasket mentioned above.

Not sure about the race only.My local Bumper to Bumper stocks them.Have used them on street engines with no problem.Nothing about race only on the package.

Whcich do you think will conform better to irregularities, .039" or .015"? The difference in expasion between cast iron/aluminum is more so than that of cast iron to cast iron. I guess "OK" is a matter of opinion and luck.

And I've installed two .020" thick steel shims on my 11.5 to 1 Cr'd, .060" overbore 409 "W" engine years ago FINE and also hand fit .020" thick, 350 engine shims for installation on my 406 SB fine!

I used good old Permatex, "Indianhead Shellac Gasket Cement" on the 409 "W" engine's stacked headgaskets and dauber bottle, CopperCote on my 406 SB!

And I'm almost anal about retorqung headgaskets at least three time's over as many day's, hot/cold cycling them!!

Darned headers take like 6 or 7 time's to get them TIGHT!!!

AJ Ive been using Fel-pro .015 gaskets on all my motors that are 25 in the hole. Never had a problem with them.

Just check both decks is all and go.

As for messing w/ stacked shims, GM used to do it stock to lower the CR some in those time's!
