I have a factory replacement V8 engine in my 71 Camaro. On the block (in the normal pad area behind alt) it says V0131DFT and some smaller numbers that i can't make out.
Is there any way to find out what engine this is?

V0131DFT
V = Engine Plant = FLINT
01 = January
31 = 31st day
DFT = 1986 305 LG4 H 150 4 Firebird (150 Hp 4 BBL Firebird)
The smaller #'s you can't make out would be the VIN# and Production Sequence# of the original Vehicle.
Hope that doesn't upset you - because that's one shameful engine to put in a 71 Camaro - on the other hand I could be wrong :o((
What is the Engine Block Casting# usually found behind the distributer on top of the motor's Transmission mounting boss?

No I am afraid youre right. I asked the previous owner of this 71 and he says it is a 305.
When the original 350 got tired he had the dealer replace it with the cheapest V8 they had. So be it. :sad:
I will have to shop a crate motor for it at some point, because 305's happen to be the worst thing in the world.
Thanks for your detective work.
