View Full Version : Battery Arching? Hood Damage

I have a few issues with my starting/electrical system that I'm sure everyone can help with. I'm probably going to give more info than needed, but this is how it all started....

67 Camaro with 350 (nothing special, little above stock)

Changed the starter (old one tested bad but was still able to start car).

New starter: Tried to start and was not getting a click or turn.
I was only getting 4.9v to the 'S' terminal post with the purple wire connected and key turned to start. Removed purple wire and checked wire alone and was getting 12v when key turned to start. Battery was around 12.5v

Assumed something was wrong with new starter. Replaced starter with another new one. Installed and got an initial turn of the starter but then nothing but a click. Checked the volts at the 's' post and saw the same, 4.9v on the post, 12v on purple wire alone. Now I realize it's not the starter :)

Volatage on battery was 12.5v and still would not start (did not think it was the battery). Battery was load tested a few months ago and checked out A-OK.

Hooked up the battery charger for 15 minutes and car started. Drove around the block for 12 minutes (reached higher than 3000 rpm), shut car off and would not start. Stuck the charger on it a few mintues and it started.

I've read a lot of posts and will do all the alternator/battery tests, but there are a few things I've noticed.

I recently replaced the negative battery cable because the terminal was basically destroyed on the inside (not an old cable either, few yrs with a few hundred miles on the car). This is a top post battery only 2 yrs old.

Also noticed that the inside of my hood is spotted (paint spotted off) as if the battery was arching off it.

Clearly this is not normal.

The only think I can think of is the post on the battery is bad (BTW...I'm a fan of disconnecting and connecting the negative ground cable all the time....)

There is no corrosion on it.

I don't want to replace the battery only the have the same issue nor do I want to switch to a side post to hide/move the issue further from the hood.

I'm curious as to what is causing this.

Also, shame on me, but the car has basically been garaged for the past 6 years with maybe a couple hundred miles put on it a year...but I do disconnect the battery with hood closed (don't know if that bit of info helps or not).

It sounds like your battery is not being charged. What's the voltage across the battery at idle? How about at idle with the lights on? Is your battery bolted down? If not, it might be bouncing up to the hood.
