I currently have a 1968 date coded BV stamped 12 bolt in my 67 SS-350, it has the original 4.10 gm date stamped gears and original 4 series eaton posi.
This rear is in excellent shape, all painted up, new axle bearings and seals, pinion seal, all new drum brake system down to new backing plates and brakelines.
I want 3.55 or 3.73 gears and probably a true trac posi and had disc brakes in mind for the future.
Should I sell my current rear (It would be perfect for someone doing a 68 Big Block resto looking for that matching number rear), and buy a custom Moser 12bolt built the way I want?
Or.
Should I pull the original 4series gear and posi, pull the drum system and modify what I have.
Looking at the money math it appears to be cheaper to sell my current rear and buy new. The BV rears seem to be pretty desirable and would offset most of my expense in buying the Moser unit.
What do you think?

Personally, I'd keep what you got. But if you're not worried about numbers & dates, then replace the axle assembly as you wish.

I would definitely get competitive bids from the three aftermarket manufacturers, Strange, Currie, and Moser.

I had a 69 BV code 12 bolt 4:10 Eaton.. I am building a Pro Touring style car with LS motor and T56, mini tubs.. So I sold mine and bought a brand new Moser exactly like I wanted..

To me it didnt matter for this car.. If I had the $$$ I would have kept it in the shop for the future but I need the $$ to buy the other rear..

I guess it depends on what you are going to do woth the car..

What ever you do dont cut it up. I almost did that until I realized what I had..

If it were a 67 date code rear I wouldn't think twice about it, it would stay, but with it being a 68 I'm not sure it does much for my car value wise and I know there are guys out there who are looking for resto pieces like this. I hadn't considered Strange or Currie, I got a quote from Frank at GPS on the Moser unit that was real good.

Wish Freddie, (i.e., big gear head), was still around to help you out......................

I put a Moser 12 bolt in my '67. Moser helped me decide on what I needed regarding my intentions for the car. Mine is a street car with considerable HP. The rear was set up by them with the heavy axles, aluminum rear cover and other goodies. I am running a ZZ502 5 speed Tremec with 3:42s. I feel that Moser did an excellent job helping me with my decision making.
Good Luck with your decision but I don't think you could go wrong with Moser.

Sell it. I am doing the same thing I have a BU 373 Z rear all OEM. Don't lock yourself into one rear eg Moser. Take a look around and check protouring.net for opinions.
Look for post's from chicane67 he builds rears for a living and has some interesting opinions.
Right now the track 9 ready to install for 2500.00 is looking sweet to me...

I say if the whole car is numbers matching, DON'T BUST IT UP. There will come a day that either you or your (kid's?) will sell the car. Just be patient. Save up the necessary bucks. Swap out the original unit for whatever you like. Keep the original posi unit like you would buy a stock for long term. A numbers matching Camaro brings a bigger & shinier penny than the pieced together Camaro’s of our world.

if it fits my 69 you could have it sold already! ;) Its you car make it how you want it not how everyone else wants it!

If you buy new do check DTS and Mark Williams too. Unlike Moser, The DTS 12-bolt is available with chrome-moly tubes and factory style brake line clips. Mark Williams uses the DTS housing but has more hardcore racing options...and a hardcore price to match.

Don't forget that we can buy 9" that take 12-bolt gears!

Best of BOTH WORLDS imho b/c you can have a 3.00 pumpkin for the road and a second 4.11 one for the strip and it only take's like an hour to swap them once you get where you are going to run and then the same time to go home, back on the hwy!!

I definately want to stay with a 12 bolt housing, I like the factory appearing look.
I've priced around some and still haven't been able to beat Frank's price on the Moser bolt-in 12 bolt. Less than $2200 to my door 3.73/True Trac (no brakes) is the best so far. If I start getting into c-clip elimination, high end axle shafts, bigger yokes, etc... the price starts to go up quick, I just don't think I need all that for the power I'm making.

FYI, with oil hitting a all time high again today at $115, I expect shipping to continue to rise, so these shipping included quotes are going to be for very short time periods. Big heavy items are expensive to ship, and I look for them to get a lot more expensive.

Someone has to do something about fuel cost, it is going to ruin everything..........................but don;t get me talking politics.......................

Frank,
Depending on what the brake system does to the cost I'll probably pull the trigger on this Monday evening(for you), Tuesday morning here in Japan, hopefully it'll be done about the time I'm getting back home.
