: 1967 front spoiler Braces
67 4 me Apr 16th, 08, 09:47 PM Has anyone had any issues with the fitment of the front spoiler braces? I just purchased a new front spoiler with the 2 braces that are supposed to mount from the lower part of the spoiler to the lower part of the front fender just in front of the tire. the braces are too short by 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch. Am I mounting it wrong or do I have the wrong braces? I purchased it from Classic industries and the kit says it comes with the correct braces (8 1/2 inches). Any advice is appreciatted.

class67 Apr 16th, 08, 11:05 PM Do you have pics of the install? to give us an idea! The install is / should be pretty straight forward though.
RobSS1113 Apr 16th, 08, 11:27 PM do you mean the chin spoiler ?? my 67 has 2 support braces .. I broke one and have not replaced it. the 2 on the sides are bolted to the bottom of the subframe not the fender . At least thats how it was on my Camaro!
67 4 me Apr 17th, 08, 07:48 AM I'll check to see if there is a mounting location on the sub-frame, I just assumed it mounted to the front lower edge of the wheel well since there is a hole for the clip that mates with the mounting screws( what else could that hole be for?)Anyway thanks for the replies,I'll start with a call to Classic today.
DjD Apr 17th, 08, 09:00 AM On a factory equipped spoiler car there are 3 braces. One in the middle connects to the forward crossmember of the sub frame the other two are out on the ends of the spoiler and connect to the lower fender panel. Since the spoiler was not a factory available option on '67s there may not be a mounting place on the lower fender section for the brace.
Fred Ficarra Apr 17th, 08, 12:13 PM Thanks for that Dennis. I was sure that the front spoiler was an extra special invention for the 69.:D
DjD Apr 17th, 08, 01:07 PM Spoilers were not available at all during most of '67 then late in the year became available over the counter. My understanding is RPO D80 was available in '68 as a factory option...
I always like to throw out this link when talking about spoilers... http://www.camaro-untoldsecrets.com/articles/rpo_d80.htm
67 4 me Apr 18th, 08, 07:38 AM Thanks everyone for all the info.I've decided to just mount it with the screws supplied along the lower valance. My car was built in late 67 which explains the mounting holes in the lower fender/wheel well. After reading several replies on many different forums,I also have concerns about hitting those extra tall parking curbs which could cause damage to the fender if I use the braces. Again, thanks for the feedback.

I have cracked a spoiler or two in my time, even with all 3 braces it's the spoiler that gets damaged not the lower fender where the brace mounts. Unless you have a carbon fiber or some other form of spoiler other than plastic it's not an issue...
Raiz Nov 30th, 09, 01:27 AM I just wanted to bump this thread because I got a spoiler from Classic Industries and just installed it on my 67 RS/SS. It doesn't fit perfectly. I had to induce a slight bend to the spoiler to get it installed correctly, and I had to install the bolts and clips in a way that doesn't seem "proper." However, it feels very sturdy after the install so we'll see how it goes. I just wanted to give a buyer beware to anyone who purchase this spoiler for their 67.

The buyer beware is that the '67 didn't come with a spoiler option and when the over the counter spoiler was offered it was different that what is now being sold as '67-'68 spoilers. As for mounting a spoiler on a '67, I believe they didn't come from the factory with any mounting holes for a spoiler.
Let's not be so quick to toss out names when talking down a part, Classic is the retailer, they don't make the spoiler they sell... Most guys don't like the spoiler that was designed for the '67 and end up with a '68 spoiler so the manufactures end up saying it's for '67 - '68.
1st 67 SS/RS Dec 1st, 09, 05:36 AM I got my spoiler from NPD and it fits fine. I decided to leave the (3) braces off, I bumped one parking stop and put a small crack in the lower lip earlier this year. My car is just an around town cruizer, so I don't think the braces are needed for my application.
Raiz Dec 1st, 09, 01:23 PM I'm still confused as to how the spoiler would mount underneath the car without the side braces on a 67. The way I installed mine, it has the center bolt, and the two side braces holding it on, however the installation package came with a bunch of smaller screws. The spoiler has holes in it for the small screws, but there is nothing to screw them into on the car... like no holes on the car where they would line up with the spoiler. It's a 67 so maybe those holes aren't there, however the holes for the side braces ARE there in the front bottom part of the fender.
Are there supposed to be some smaller clips for the small screws? Possibly your spoiler from NPD mounts differently than the one I got from Classic.
Melrose RS Dec 1st, 09, 01:28 PM I drilled holes in the lower valance for the small screws and used the outer brackets to the lower fenders with no center bracket. No trouble at all.
Your lower fender pieces are probably not '67 or someone else drilled them out before you. The over the counter spoiler available late in '67 didn't come with braces and you had to drill the mounting holes. The braces are probably why your spoiler doesn't fit right. Take them off and use the spoiler as a template to mark and drill the valance. If the screws that came with it are self tapping they will thread themselves or you can use nuts and bolts if you drill largeer holes...
crazyshopmonkey Dec 9th, 09, 12:35 AM There's a simple spoiler Diagram on steve's camaro web site

ohsurfrider Feb 9th, 10, 11:09 AM Can someone post pics of their spoiler install? I'd like to actually see how others have mounted theirs.
1968 Z28 Feb 9th, 10, 12:58 PM Can someone post pics of their spoiler install? I'd like to actually see how others have mounted theirs.Check this link for the AIM install for the D80 option on the '67 and '69. There wasn't a picture in the '68 AIM of the D80 option....it got left out for some reason.

This is for the factory install....but I suppose you can change it any way you want to get it installed. As you can see, the first design "67 and '68 spoiler only mounted to the lower valance with screws. The late '67 and early '68 valances did not have the holes drilled in them, they had to be hand drilled for sheet metal screws and that is what is shown on the '67 AIM. Sometime during the "68 production all the valances got holes punched in them and then they started using machine screws on the spoiler side and nuts on the valance side. My original '68 was fitted this way. The second design '68 and '69 spoiler was mounted with the screws to the lower valance as well as the three braces, one center brace to the front crossmember and the two outer braces to the lower fender extension. I'm sure the reason for the braces was the fact that the first design spoiler was shorter (measuring from valance toward the ground) and didn't catch as much air, so therefore didn't need them......the second design spoilers were longer (measuring from the valance toward the ground) and therefore caught more air and needed the extra bracing to hold it steady under speed.
Well....my thinking anyway.
Hope this helps....
Chuck Feb 9th, 10, 08:27 PM I have a '67 with the repo type front spoiler. No braces on mine. I have been over 100mph at the strip and it did not fold over.
zman1969 Feb 16th, 10, 12:03 PM I was warned a long time ago by someone about the braces causing damage to the fenders if something is hit - seems to make sense-anyone with any experiences want to chime in here? so I was wondering about using nylon attachment bolts or something that may break loose instead of damaging a fender? or possibly making the braces weaker or with a thinner or bendable metal? I'd much rather replace that than have to fix or find a replacemnet NOS fender!
In the past I havent ever used the braces myself.
Stewie Feb 16th, 10, 12:56 PM I had and original 69 Z/28 in 1969. The first thing that came off was the center bracket for the spoiler. I ran up on a parking curb, repaired it with a couple of washers as the hole on the spoiler punched through. Then when I did it again (duh). I just unbolted the center bracket from the frame.
My 68 had a front spoiler on it when I bought it but no braces. It lookes as if the holes had been drilled and small bolts with a lock washer and nut installed in the holes provided on the spoiler.
Since it was a cruise night car I didn't forsee any parking curbs to bump into so I purchased a set of brackets.
I am pretty sure my dealer gets them through Classic. I was able to bolt on the side brackets with the existing hole in the fender. To my surprise there was no hole in the frame for the center bracket, so it is in my tool box. Sturdy enough without it.
I have the Canadian documents on it and no spoiler option on it. I guess they must have drilled and tapped the holes on a spoiler car in 68s, on the frame.
ohsurfrider Feb 20th, 10, 07:42 AM I finally installed my front spoiler. I was going to install it without the braces but it didn't feel sturdy enough. As others have mentioned the side braces were short. Quick fix, drilled smaller holes next to the holes already on the spoiler (not enough room to use provided bolts). Used smaller bolts to attach brace to spoiler.
