I was wondering were you guys are getting your molded hood insulation pads these days. I bought the one for my car through Ricks a couple years ago and it wasn't too crazy to ship it, but my buddy and I called Classic Industries on one to put in an order of parts he was going to get and it was almost twice the cost of the pad just to ship it. That seems nuts to me. Have any of you found a good place to get one of these from that doesn't have crazy shipping costs? Or is there a way to order it directly from the place that manufactures them? I was also going to ask about the correct application for these pads. A friend of mine and I are doing a bunch of detail work on his 1969 SS/RS 396 convertible that has deluxe interior and SS hood. I thought that I was told that the cars with deluxe interior are the only cars that came with the hood insulation pad. Is this correct? I was also going to ask about the Z10's since he also has a Z10 with standard interior would that car get the hood insulation pad? I didn't know if there was an exception for the Z10 cars or not. Thanks a lot for any help you may be able to provide.

Hey Jesse,

Try and give these guys a call http://www.cpucarparts.com/ at 1-888-530-0033. I want to replace my loose fibre type with the molded version as well. My research has brought me to this place. Let me know how it works out if you get it from them...I think they charge about $35 to ship...

If you search "hood insulation", there has been a lot of discussion about what cars get what insulation.

As Eric pointed out there is a lot in the archives in this subj...but just to add just a bit of fuel to the fire...I contacted one of the bigger retro places just the other day...and the gal in sales was I think honest with me when she said that the molded prob comes from just the one supplier... and advised me of going with the more messier, fibre-type, as they have been getting a fair bit of complaints about the newer molded insulation coming out... seems they are quite fragile and break very easily... so she said under her breath.. "Go with the non-molded".

I was going for the molded, but will pass for the other now.

The molded is the best reproduction out there... if you rough handle it... yes it will break, but I had no problems with it at all... and it looks right... you are right though the shipping is truck freight and it ain't cheap unless you have an account somewhere... The shipping from Ricks (100 miles or so) was $60 just on the hood insulation and I get a 74% discount on truck freight.

Did 69's come with insulation for all or was it an option. I don't think mine came with it from the factory.

All 69s with custom interior, special ducted hood or SS had hood insulation.

I ordered my molded cowl pad from Ground Up. I didn't use the pins that came with the pad. Instead I used the orginal type pins. It seems to be holding in place pretty well so far.

Oh, BTW .... Just about $30 for shipping.

I have had problems with the clips popping out on the flat pads too !
Like all chi-neeze repo junk, there not the same.
Compare a original with a repo if you can, notice the step on the stem of the repo is not as squared off as the original.
This causes the repo one to ramp out of the hole.
Try cutting some of that material square with an X acto knife, or a file may work too.
In addition to that I take a 1/4" wide coffee stir or a piece a tounge depressor cut to length and slide it into them slot on the stem after the clip it installed. And blacken the end w/paint or marker.
I hade a moulded pad on my 69 for the last 5 years and it was fine.
The corner of the rad cap does touch the pad on some cars. Mine made a small hole. Errr... I ment pattina!

Godd Luck Mike

In addition to the above, I am removing the Cowl Hood on my car and installing the correct born with SS hood.
I have a new pad for the SS hood and will try and report back after I git it installed on the car.

The square pins are wrong... I bought the rounds ones as well and haven't had a problem in 2 years.

I have ZL2 hood with molded hood insulation and also used the extra cost round fasteners. I have had no problems with the pins coming out. However, the surface is VERY brittle, and I managed to chip out a couple of pieces.

I had a chance to see Larry Christensen's unrestored Yenko with the hood insulation still in place. It was molded, but the surface was not nearly as hard and brittle as the repops. No chipping after 35 years.

Heartbeat bought an NOS one off ebay 2-3 years ago, and I expected Jim to use it to produce a more technically correct piece. (technically correct, and expensive!) So far, nothing.

Checked with yet another biggie in the retro scene, and got them to admit that the quality of the molded has not been as it had been in the past...sign of the times eh? Cut corners...improve profit.

Had also read in the past that for years the newer type pins have been causing probs, with the guys using bandaide/home fixes to make them stay in place.

I too hope that HB may/might some up with a superior product.
