I hope someone can help me. I'm removing the head on my straight six 230 in my '69 (steam billowing from the exhaust pipe..got to take it to the machine shop and have it checked). I've removed all 14 head bolts, the intake and exhaust manifolds, thermostat housing, and anything that may get in my way, but the head isn't budging. I haven't tried to lift or nudge it with anything but my hands so far, and short of a 5 lb. fine adjustment hammer is there anything I'm missing or are these just that stubborn at times to remove?

Heads can be a little hard to remove. I just use a hammer and tap all along where the gasket is and it will come lose.The gasket is glued to the head and the block so it is "STUCK" on there.If a little tap don't work use a little more A$$!

You might put a jack handle in the port and pry or bump it with your hand.
Don't bang the valve with it.

put the manifolds back on and fire it up! put the head bolts back on too, but don't tighten them, leave backed out a few turns. I have gotten heads loose this way before..

I've always been able to take them off by tapping around the head at the base and the prying with a broom handle or jack handle at a few of the ports. The head gasket is creating the bond between the two. It shouldn't be too hard to loosen. You can also put the exhaust manifold back on, if you run into stubbornness, and apply leverage there. Once, I used a floor jack with the right length of 2X4 to apply upward pressure on the manifold to pop a head loose.

Make sure you have all the bolts out... It's happened to most of us

Crowbar has worked for me in the past if you are going to bang on the head use a rubber mallet so as not to do damage and crack it.

Success!! It can off! A few short taps at the gasket line and with the help of a jack handle it's now on the bench! I'll be taking it to the machine shop Sat for a rebuild.
