View Full Version : Halogen replacement headlamps
Microgiant Apr 21st, 08, 02:09 PM Where is a good place to get some QUALITY replacement HALOGEN headlamps and what do you reccommend? Anyone have some pics? My local autoparts only had the sealed beam replacements but im looking for something nicer and brighter maybe with a replaceable bulb. I like the crystal look of these but I dont want it too look to ricey.
Anyone know who makes these?
Im told these have a Aluminumn body.

Chris-in-Cali Apr 21st, 08, 02:56 PM I've got the Silvania Silverstar's in my 69. Picked them up at a Pepboys and they are WAY BRIGHTER than the orginals. BUT... make sure you upgrade with some relay's first if you haven't already. Gotta make sure the bulbs are getting the 14+ volts they need.

I installed the relay kit from Mad Electrical like a lot of others have and checked out the original bulbs afterwards just to see. They where TWICE as bright. Tested the connections before and after the relays. Before the bulbs where getting like 11 volts, after they were getting 14+.
So I then put in the Silverstars and they are a nice WHITE bright light. Kick on the high beams and it's bright enough to play ball outside at night.
So.......... relay kit, if you haven't already.
Microgiant Apr 21st, 08, 04:57 PM Do yours look like those? I think I have figured out how to add relays without modifying my original harness using a donor hanress...
67CamaroRS/SS Apr 22nd, 08, 06:49 AM I got my housings from a store online and filled them H.I.D.'s. Nothing compares to H.I.D.'s. Once you have driven behind those, everything else looks like you don't even have lights on.
cdnpont Apr 23rd, 08, 01:18 PM Susquehanna MotorSports has Hella 7" E-Code headlamps for a decent price. Imop these lamps are the way to go. It gives you so many options as to H4 bulbs to choose from. And the prcision polished glass and metal reflector blows away anything oem or china. Yes, they're not HID's but for the price...
The only drawback to the H4 bulb, is that you reall need to deliver good current to them to optimize their brightness. Weak charging, poor wiring and connectors will not cut it with these. One really should think about converting the lighting wiring to a relay type setup. It's relay not that difficult to do.

67CamaroRS/SS Apr 24th, 08, 06:35 AM Mark, I had housings with that exact lens pattern and the beam was horrible. You could barely even see any light coming through. The best lens pattern I have found is the Diamond Cut with or without the tribar.

This is, of course, just my opinion and I am in no way chastising another persons modifications. I am simply expressing my experiences with that style of lens design.
cdnpont Apr 24th, 08, 08:35 AM Thats strange Charlie,
Barely see any light coming through?
Were they actual Hella's? Are you on relays?
My brother did these Hella's two years ago on his 67' with relays, and the difference was unreal. The pattern was indeed different, in that it really had a distinctive cut off unlike a north american pattern that was more diffuse. Some might find that unusual, but they were miles above oem.
Cheers, Mark.
bob560 Apr 24th, 08, 09:12 AM I too have Hella's on my '68 with 60/55W H4 Bulbs (from Susquehanna)... combined with a 140 amp alternator upgrade and a relay harness I got from Painless Wiring (PN# 30815). The difference is phenomenal. I couldn't be happier with the brightness, and really dig the ability to use try different bulbs without changing anything else.

67CamaroRS/SS Apr 24th, 08, 09:28 AM I used H.I.D.'s with that pattern and the H.I.D.'s come with their own wiring system that includes ballasts, transformers, fuse, and relays so I know it wasn't a current supply problem. I also run a 250amp alternator so I know it wasn't a power supply problem. The beam that hit the ground was so spread out I could hardly see anything. Once I switched to the diamond cut pattern the light output is so intense that I get high beamed from oncoming traffic thinking I have my highs on. Perhaps the H.I.D.'s were to much for that particular pattern.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Apr 25th, 08, 06:17 AM DSE sells them...

That's the style. Plain glass with the diamond pattern on the reflector. I have gotten exceptional performance with this style, especially with the H.I.D. lights.
bob560 Apr 25th, 08, 07:02 AM Those DSE lights are nice... but holy smokes, that price!!! My Hella lights, with bulbs, were less than half that, and I can't imagine ever needing something brighter than what they've given me. They're immensely better than stock. If you're budget-conscious, I highly recommend them.
This is exactly what I got, and where I got them:

novaderrik Apr 25th, 08, 04:45 PM i just use the regular halogens you can get at Wal Mart, and on both my Nova and Monte, once i put a bigger alternator with a BIG wire going directly to the battery, and they got 14 volts to the bulb. they are bright enough to see where you are going, but they don't blind other drivers on the road like those annoying HID lights do.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Apr 26th, 08, 03:47 AM I'm just going to be in before the street lights come on.....
67CamaroRS/SS Apr 26th, 08, 09:57 AM As long as I can see where I am going, that's all that matters.
Geezer Apr 27th, 08, 07:51 PM Using relays is pretty important on these cars when changing over to halogen. I started using Hella lamps back in the late 70s and the draw on the wiring would melt the connectors at the dimmer switch.
