Did they make this combination? Could a factory exec have ordered something like this?

:noway: No L-78's with a turbo 400 in 68 and no AC with any year

What if it were a factory experimental car? This guy swears it is all original and has a special paint code and a additional plate on the firewall GM Looking Plate.

I'd be very suspicious of any 68 w/o paperwork. They are the easiest 1st gen to clone....

Post photos of the stamp pad, cowl tag, block cast date and cast #.
Post photo of all documentation...include engine compartment and special firewall plate.

How many owners? Have you spoken to the previous owners, try to dig up old original engine photos etc.

I suppose if its an experimental car, it should have a very early build date/and VIN

More likely than not, somewhere along the line, someone got the story behind this car twisted...

Maby the 4 speed was swapped for an automatic...maby the car has dealership added A/C...we need more info...

I moved this to TAG section as the CRG folks will more readily see it here and comment as well. Mark C , Kurt, Dan, William?

I believe the reason A/C was not available on solid lifter cars was not due to the power rob with the A/C, but rather the difficulty in removing the driver side valve cover to set the valves. It would require the removal of the upper A/C compressor bracket.

My car started life as a s/b with A/C. It's now an L72 with A/C, and I converted everything to b/b stuff, including the evaporator box. I went with hydraulic lifters so I would not need to access the valves.

The problem I ran into was that I wanted to use deep groove pulleys. There was no deep groove, 3 groove crank pulley available, so I used a standard 3 groove crank pulley and standard a/c , p/s, smog and water pump pulleys. Only the Alt was deep groove. It took some creative adjustment to get all the belts in alignment.

I use mine as an example because the L78 and L72 are virtually identical, except for the bore.

Is yours a factory L78 with A/C, special ordered by a GM exec? Who knows! I doubt it, but I've learned to never say never. I believe some 68 Nova L-78 were ordered with TH400 under the COPO program, and I think at least one 68 Camaro. I'm a little fuzzy about the TH400 for 68, though.

I'm a major doubter. I've seen these before and they almost never hold up to deeper scrutiny. :)

Autos were never installed in any L78 Camaro in 68.
AC was not available in any 67-69 L78 car and some exec would not be able to override that.....

Maybe the engine or the A/C was dealer added...
There is one 68 Yenko with A/C... I asked one time whether the A/C was added to an L78 body or if it was a L34/L35 A/C car with the L72 added... I never got a response.

About 10 years ago I bought an NOS 65 Impala quarter panel off of a guy that lives south of Beckley West Virginia. He lived off of 77 in the mountains and had a shop with a stash of a bunch of camaro and chevelle parts cars outside. In his garage was a 67 cvt. 396/375 4 spd black/white top/white int. chevelle with AC.This car was loaded. He had protecto plate and GM docs ordered by someone in GM management.Maybe someone in that area knows the car.It was 10 years ago but I'm positive that was the drivetrain in the car.The quarter panel add was in hemmings around 95-97.Also there was a black Nickey Chevelle 67 L89 that was delivered to a doctor in Georgia with a 396/375 AC car?

it was not avail on the solid lifter cars because they would spin too fast for the compressor ...

poof!

I did that with a 74 L82 Z28 I had despite the fact the car came with a larger diameter a/c pulley as an attempt to keep the compressor alive at upper RPM's ... (duh, they should have had a cutout for them ...)

Chevy made no solid lifter cars with a/c until the handfull of 72 LT-1 Corvettes that were made.

Not quite. '64-'65 Corvettes with the 327/365hp engine (30-30 cam) were available with A/C; I had one of each (the '65 was a Tanker).
