Hi all,

I want to change the gears in my rear end to 3.73's, but I do not know what type carrier I have. The numbers on my axle read (I think): PF 1129 C

The car's original dealer's invoice says its a 05G80CA positract axle 308R.

I also see a number that reads K158?

Any help would be appreciated.

Peter, "PF" for 1969 would be a 2.73 10 bolt posi. A 3.08 10 bolt Posi would be a "PE" code, so you might want to check this again. More than likely the lower leg of the E has been chopped off, or was stamped very light.

A 3.08 carrier will work with 3.73 gears. However, before you go investing in new gears, you'll want to physically verify the 3.08's are still in the car!! After 40 years, anything is possible and someone may have replaced them with something else by now.

By the way, K158 would be November 15th, 1968 casting date, and the 1129C (which is probably 1129G) would be an axle assembled on November 29th at the Detroit gear and axle plant (1st shift).

Thanks. I guess the car is missing it's original rear end because it's a 67. I knew the motor was not original, but I was hoping the rear was.

Looks like it. In this case you REALLY need to pull the cover off and see what you have. They may be 2.73 gears, and if they are, you won't be able to go with the 3.73's. (at least not what that carrier.)

Kind of a bummer, but oh well. I just hope I can put the 3.73's in there. I'm not a numbers guy, but it would have been nice to have another original piece. The original tranny is probably gonzo as well.

Thanks again,
Peter

I don't have the original engine or trans either, but it does retain the original 12 bolt...:hurray:

The axle is original. 12A car with a late Nov 12 bolt 3.31 posi axle. Matches the POP. :)

Btw, don't believe that window sticker, it's a repro. :(

Kurt, I don't see how a November, 1968 axle could be original on a 1967 Camaro! What have I missed???

Almost for sure it's K156. :) Just an unclear casting year.

Ah... See, I was only going by the numbers Peter posted. Easy enough to find out though. Peter, is the axle a 10 bolt or a 12 bolt?

10 bolt - 1969
12 bolt - 1967 (ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!!)

Apparently Kurt has "inside information" that isn't published here....;)

Alright, now I am getting a bit nervous about the car. Can someone please clue me in? What did you find back in '04 when she was on e-bay?

Kurt, I am sending you a pm.

Thanks,
Peter

BTW, it does have a 12-bolt, and it could be and 8 or a 6, which makes sense.
