View Full Version : Cutting Fender Lips, Don't Cry Anyone
b.w.t.road Apr 22nd, 08, 10:27 PM I have a 69 Camaro and may need to cut the rear 1/4's. The part I'm refering to is the part people usually roll with a baseball bat. Mine, as I'm sure everyone elses also has the outer 1/4 and an inner well also. Anyone that has cut theirs how far did you go and did you reweld the outer and inner 1/4's back together after you cut them.

68IslTeal Apr 23rd, 08, 06:16 AM I am told that alot of the aftermarket quarters have extra metal on the inside lip I am told. I know the pair of quarters I used had about twice the sized inside lip that my originas had. After mounting them up it was easy to sawzall off about a quarter the width of the lip without even coming close to the outer wheel well.
Everett#2390 Apr 23rd, 08, 09:43 AM I believe he's looking for more tire room.
I remember others doing it with a baseball bat and rolling the car to "form" the wheel opening. Only problem was it kindda broke the paint and I think this is what he is trying to prevent.
b.w.t.road Apr 23rd, 08, 10:19 AM Thanks for the responses. Yes it's for bigger tires. Yes I do have one origional 1/4 and one repo that does in fact have a wider lip. I currently have 275/60r15 and one side rubs. I'm going to 275/40r17 and I'm sure some material will have to be removed. The baseball has not been sufficiant. A little concerned about paint cracking but I'll just heat gun it a little first.
69TAPoser Apr 23rd, 08, 10:40 AM I have aftermarket qtrs on both sides of my '69 Bird and I will be needing to do the same. The lip is WAY bigger than OEM. I figure I need about 1/4". I am running 275/40/18s.
I was planning on trying to do mine with a cut-off wheel.

I was going to do the same, but a buddy of mine convinced me to use the sawzall. It was quicker he stated, and less hassle of changing worn down cut off wheels, and less heat on the metal. /shrug
If your looking to roll the lip visit eastwood co. they have a lip roller they sell.
b.w.t.road Apr 23rd, 08, 11:17 AM Are you guys cutting the entire lip off?

I'm not, I am just looking to take 1/4" off (about the extra that a repro panel has).

Skeeter55 Apr 23rd, 08, 12:55 PM NO NO NO Just use a high speed cutting wheel and only take off about a 1/16 right before the welds are. Do not use a sawzall it will tear the metal up... Tape everything off mark a line and slowly start appalling pressure with the cutting wheel, now you only need to cut were the tire will travel which is the center of the wheel well.

I dunno what kindof sawzall or blade you used that tore it up, but mine cut off smoothly.
b.w.t.road Apr 23rd, 08, 04:57 PM I was reading today, someone else had rubbing on the inner wheelhouse an pounded that out with a hammer. Anyone want to comment on that. I should tell you, my cars not a piece of junk but it's not a gem either. I plan to someday do a DSE mini tub but not today.
Skeeter55 Apr 23rd, 08, 05:02 PM I dunno what kindof sawzall or blade you used that tore it up, but mine cut off smoothly. It didnt tear mine up, but what i said is it will tear it up, a sawzal speed is just to slow to get a smooth cut and especially if his car is already painted, it will jerk the **** out of it.
Fred Ficarra Apr 23rd, 08, 05:02 PM Wow! Power tools! I used a hacksaw with the blade turned sideways. The lip is ALL GONE. That was 28 years ago. It worked for me because I don't drive on wet roads unless the rain gods catch me coming home.

Anyone that has cut theirs how far did you go and did you reweld the outer and inner 1/4's back together after you cut them.If and when you decide to this, make sure you tape off all surrounding areas and after the cuts you can apply a coat of primer-por15-or under coating to the raw edges.
Mud Rat Apr 23rd, 08, 09:17 PM Take a look at this for rolling your lips http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=6159&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C503%2C504%2C514&KickerID=232&KICKER
There is also a spray or a gel you can put on the lip when you cut it to keep any heat down so you dont burn the paint.
