borrone821 Apr 23rd, 08, 05:45 AM Does anyone know where I can get an adapter plate to put a single DIN player into my 67? Right now it's got a tape player and no am/fm. Killing me during drives, because after 20 minutes on the highway, the engine noise is a little boring. Just looking for the adapter plate to put a CD player in the dash.
thanks guys
Jim
67CamaroRS/SS Apr 23rd, 08, 06:50 AM When you say adapter, do you already have the dash opened up for a din style unit? First you have to cut out the two side areas that the shafts slide into. If you haven't removed those pieces, that is where you start. They don't make an adapter plate. Once you cut the side pieces out, you slide the cage that holds the new radio in and then slide the head unit into the cage and dash.
borrone821 Apr 23rd, 08, 06:56 AM I've got a cassette player in there right now... it's in the stock location. I didn't know if someone made a plate like the ones that crutchfield gives you to mount a din sized player in.
67CamaroRS/SS Apr 23rd, 08, 07:01 AM Does the cassette player have the shafts or is it a DIN cassette player. The OEM radio is a style that has the two shafts to adjust volume and station, etc. The dash has metal the encloses the shafts. It's not open like a DIN style is. The previous owner must have already cut out the portion that holds the shafts. That is the ONLY way you could have a DIN style cassette unit installed now.
borrone821 Apr 23rd, 08, 07:10 AM There are two shafts for the knobs, but i have no idea whether he cut anything out or not. Whether I have to do that or not, the bracket that holds the radio slopes down at about a 30 degree angle... how do you overcome that with a din style head unit?
67CamaroRS/SS Apr 23rd, 08, 07:46 AM First thing you have to do is remove the radio. Second is you will have to remove a portion of the dash on each side where the shafts slide through the dash. This will allow you to have the correct amount of room to mount the DIN radio. They don't make head unit installation kits for our cars like they do for the newer cars. There is a company that sells radios that look like OEM style units, but they have all the features of the newer radios, like cd, I-Pod capability, satellite radio, etc. If you don't want to go that route, then get out the mini sawzall and start cutting. Once you remove the portion of the dash that holds the shafts, you can clean up the cuts and install the DIN radio just like you would install it in any car that already had a DIN radio. Remove all the face plates on the radio installed currently and you will see what I mean when I say that the dash holds the shafts with the dash.
keypilot Apr 23rd, 08, 08:29 AM i am at a similar point, i have that all too rare uncut dash. my car is nowhere near stock or orginal but i hate to cut the dash. it is the only reason i have no tunes in there.
it is coming though, i can hear the cut off tool now.......bbbzzzzzzz
67CamaroRS/SS Apr 23rd, 08, 08:36 AM There is a company calles Custom Autosound that sells original looking radios that have the shafts, but offer newer features. CD, I-pod, satellite, memory card slots, etc. If you don't want to cut the dash, but want better sound and more features, call them. Here is a link to their page.

They can help you out if you want to keep your dash looking original.
chevrolover Apr 26th, 08, 04:37 PM I'd do some research on the custom autosound units before buying one. The quality is not very good. Check out the retrosound units for another option (jeg's has them).
