Do you have the stock air box lid or aftermarket? There are a number of good aftermarket lids, I have a Texas Speed and Performance lid on my 99 Z28. Why do you want to use a cone? The restriction on an LS1 is the exhaust side not the intake side if your running an LS6 intake manifold or bigger. I would go with an aftermarket lid and a K&N filter, that's all you need. If you go with a cone type filter you'll need to relocate the IAT sensor. The intake air charge was designed to come up the air damn at the bottom, go up across the radiator, thru the air filter and then thru the IAT and MAF sensors and into the the intake manifold, it's a good design. This is a good website for the LS1's. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/
