Hey Guys (and any ladies),

I ran across this posting on eBay today...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-Camaro-Z-28-1969-69-Chevrolet-Camaro-Z-28-V8-350_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6161QQihZ020QQitemZ 300219395250QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

or try to put this item number in the ebay search field.......(link didn't seem to fully appear)

300219395250

I went to inform the guy that his VIN starting with 1233.... was for a 6 cyl car and it didn't match his cowl tag which is ...READY FOR THIS

12437 NOR206475

Everything I've ever seen and read about decoding VINS for first gen camaros is:

100000 for 1967 camaros
300000 for 1968 camaros
500000 for 1969 camaros

This would mean his cowl tag belongs to the 106475 1967 camaro produced correct???

YET, the cowl tag seem to show the "X-11" in the correct lower right position.

CORRECTION.....I squinted again and it seems to be the "X44" either way its and X car :)

I was under the impression the imfamous X codes were only use for later production 1969 camaros, is that right?

What exactly is going on with that cowl tag????

Had to post, Very interesting........OR, straighten out my facts, I'm serious, I don't want to spew forth all this on "false internet truths"

Have a great weekend All!

From CRG.....

12337 VIN vs 12437 Cowl Tag Code

Though it looks very similar to the first part of the VIN, the body style code on the Fisher Body cowl tag did not have the same meaning. Fisher Body didn't need the type of engine coded on the cowl tag, and so stamped the 3rd digit of the Fisher style code differently from the VIN.

The 3rd digit of the VIN identifies which engine (L6 or V8) the car had from the factory. A VIN engine digit of 3 indicates a L6 engine, while a VIN engine digit of 4 indicates a V8 engine. The cowl tags for 1967 Camaros were stamped with a style code of 12x37 or 12x67, where the x was set to 4 for standard interior or 6 for custom interior. All 1968-69 Camaros had a style code of 12437 or 12467 on the cowl tag - the 3rd digit of the firewall style number for these two years was fixed to 4 and effectively had no meaning.

Since the seller hasn't actually posted a picture of the VIN, I believe it's a typo from the seller. This part of the VIN in the description lines up with a '69.....9N566277 and is the 66,277 69 manufactured.

That cowl tag reads X44 not X11 from what I can see... The vin he posted starts with 5xxxxxx so it is correct the cowl number is not the same as the vin...

Blue standard interior (715) and still has the blue belts but recomends dying the belts black? Glacier blue (53 53) but paints the car red???? Alt mount on wrong side??? And the tag even shows X44 (base car) I'm confused...

Yeah, I had to correct myself to the X44 after squinting at the picture again and made that correction to my orig. post.

I hear what you guys are saying on the original VIN (on the dash panel) but shouldn't the Cowl Tag VIN line up.......at least the part of the production number?

That was what I'm really puzzled about.
Do my eyes not read:

...NOR206475 on the cowl just about the 53 53 paint code?

Wouldn't that not be the 106475th camaro off the assembly line in 1967?

If this is right, seeing as how 1967 camaros started at 100000 it would roll into the 200,000 range being the 206475 (hense 106475th car), Right?

So if that is true........where did the X44 come from, or why is it starting in the range of 200,000 for the assembly number?

OK, so I just found another tag on a 69 camaro online that has the cowl tag assembly number NOR303800.......

Guess I need some more schooling on cowl tag decoding..........just when I though figured something out.

Thanks for the input anyhow guys!

Drive'em like you stole'em anyway!

NO! there is no such thing as a "cowl tag vin". Also the other numbers will not be the same.

His VIN is in line with the build date on the tag.

The x-code is a valid for the build date. X codes started showing up around 12B.

X44 is a base car.

The trim tag is probably original to the car.

There is a correlation between the Trim Tag and VIN. While they are different numbers, there is a range of Trim Tag numbers that will put the body build date in a date range of known production. The VIN also has a relationship to production date of its own.
The 2 numbers then need to be within certain parameters to help prove that neither have been altered.
CRG has that information in the link provided above.
