View Full Version : Burgundy paint questions
JBs69conv Apr 26th, 08, 06:18 PM Im getting close to making the color choice for my 69 convertible and need some help. Anyone know of a really nice burgundy? I realy like kandy brandywine, but after reading about it, i dont think i could paint it myself. I did read that shimrin brandywine is easier to do, but I havnt seen any cars with this type of paint. Does it look nice?
My plan is to have a deep burgundy with white hockey stick stripe and white standard interior. Id like to try and paint it myself (novice) so the easier to paint the better.
Thanks
John
MissionCritical Apr 26th, 08, 06:37 PM I'm not a painter, but also wanted my car with this color. I wanted HOK Candy Brandywine and just when I was ready to do it, in the best of ironies, ran into a guy at a car show with a '69 Mach 1 painted in that exact color. I think he used Gold Metallic as the base coat. It was at the time and still is the most awesome color I have every seen on a car. When I asked him about the paint, he said this, much to my shock:
He absolutely hated it.
It wasn't the color, but the care that he had to take to keep it looking that way; the fear of scratches, etc. He said that he would never do it again.
I also tried to find a more touchup friendly color like that, but I just have not found one. My car is now Powler Orange, and after seeing the chips that I have put in it just putting it all together, I'm sort of glad that I didn't do the Candy. But I've always wondered what it would have looked like...

JBs69conv Apr 26th, 08, 06:57 PM Kevin, thats exactly what ive been reading about, the true kandy stuff is impossible to match up. but supposedly the shimrin candy is like a regular basecoat clearcoat system, but have yet to see one to compare it with the original kandy brandywine.
I was looking at the 2008 corvette burgundy, it looks ok, but doesnt have the wow affect that kandy brandywine has. nor does any of the other regular burgundys that ive seen
68IslTeal Apr 26th, 08, 07:39 PM look at the hok meteor maroon shimrin metalic I think thats it, anyways a friend just did his 69 chevy p/u in that color. I liked it so much I am now torn between that and the planet green metallic.
JBs69conv Apr 26th, 08, 08:19 PM Hey Jeff i dont suppose you have a pic of your friends p/u? Did it have a real deep look to it?
djudge Apr 26th, 08, 08:51 PM john, i also was looking for a burgundy type of color for my 68 camaro, but i wanted something darker than the than 68 model year burgundy to make all the stainless and chrome stand out. i ended up going with a mid 90's chevy dark cherry metallic. this is one of the colors offered on a mid 90's impalla ss. it is a conventional base/clear type paint and uses a dark gray value shade undercoat ( primer or sealer).
here are a few pics.

68IslTeal Apr 26th, 08, 09:33 PM Hey Jeff i dont suppose you have a pic of your friends p/u? Did it have a real deep look to it?
I think it looks pretty deep, but mainly it just looks like its wet all the time. I love it! Its not to dark and its not to light imo. I was just blown away with how great the hok kosmic clear makes the paint job look.
I had always thought hok was out of my price range and was planning on shooting spi viper red. That is until he came by in his truck friday. I just ordered me some 2 oz bottles of planet green and maroon along with the clear. I have 2 68 camaro models I plan on painting and hopefully that will help me decide between the maroon or green.
I gotta be honest though the maroon surprised me. Stop over on tcpglobal.com pick up some 2 oz paints and shoot them on something. I can not pick a color online or via paint chips... just never does give me a feel for the color. BTW he said hok suggests using their metallic sealer under their metallic bases, but after 3 coats of base does the sealer color matter as long as the body is 1 solid color?
BTW the maroon I am talking about is no wheres as dark as that on the camaro pix mike posted. Here are 2 cars I found online that are close to the color I am talking about. I think the 1st door pix has a orange kandy over it though, or looks so due to lighting.
guccieng Apr 26th, 08, 09:39 PM check my sig (firebird). everyone seems to love that color, alot more than me, too!
68IslTeal Apr 26th, 08, 10:00 PM Just curious and i dunno if its doable, perhaps a paint pro can advise. But imo you only get that deep look imo with single stage that is then mixed 50/50 with a clear top coat, unless you go kandy or a 3 part system.
I dunno if you can and may be alot of work, but I bet a single stage metallic shot with a mid coat metallic/clear 50% mix, then with just clear would look really deep and wet. I wonder if thats doable? I know that is the only way my friend will shoot black, and man they look deep/wet!
JBs69conv Apr 26th, 08, 10:35 PM Im glad to see the responses, Mike your car looks awsome I realy like how the white stripe sets off the burgundy. Thats the look im going for.
Jeff your right, wet is a good way to describe the kandy colors. As far as mixing and ways to paint, im about as novice as it gets, Its just that ive done everything so far on the car, from building the motor to building the rear end, so im gonna try to paint it to. If it ends up looking like crap ill break down and farm it out. heh
John J, what paint is that on your firebird? (color/type) I really like that. And why dont you like it that much?

guccieng Apr 26th, 08, 10:43 PM i just had the color match so my hood tach could be painted. it came out to 1996 dark torreador red metallic, used on minivans. i like it, but others really seem to like it. i'm more of a white, green or blue kinda guy.
JBs69conv Apr 26th, 08, 10:59 PM John J, ive changed my color several times (in my head), at first I wanted an all white car like DjD, then I thought about going to the original color Lemans blue, then i seen the first car on this link
http://www.69pace.com/paint1969burgundy.htm
I fell in love with it, so I started looking at all the burgundys, so far kandy brandywine is my favorite. But my limited painting ability has me looking for a more user friendly paint. Now im gonna be looking at all the burgundy minivans I see. heh

m21man Apr 27th, 08, 12:23 AM my old car, 1991 GM Dark Metallic Red. It looked almost black at night, but popped a nice maroon during the day. I actually once when through a car cruise and the announcer said, nice triple black 67' camaro haha.
The car was originally Maderia maroon, I actually picked the color out of a book, it was the closest the shop could get without paying alot of money. The color actually turned out unbelievable and I got countless compliments and everybody always wanted to know what color it was and if it was original.

AutoRodTechnologies Apr 27th, 08, 09:36 AM I've sprayed a few candy jobs in my day,, i try to suggest to stay away from them, they are a real pain.. plus if something happens you won't like what has to be done to get a good match. the bad part is worrying about scratching it or chipping it,, it will make you scared to drive it once you start to see what is involved.
get some of the shimrin and spray that out,, you might like it,, they are much easier to work with.

John510 Apr 28th, 08, 12:51 AM How about Crystal Red off the 2008 corvette?
68IslTeal Apr 28th, 08, 06:30 AM Those colors are not indicative of the real color. If you look at the paint chips for the read they all look the same. Also consider the fact they do not offer small sample sizes for you to check the color in real life, and not to forget even on their forums they have only had 1 or 2 people talk about the eastwood single stage paints. I like eastwood, but do not think I would risk all the work I put in my camaro wityh an econo line type paint.
