98 conv will not come out of park to take off top of console book says to put shifter in netural shifter will not move HELP

Parked on a hill? Get somebody to push the car uphill a little to ease the bind on the parking pawl.

Try rocking it. If that didn't help, I would be underneath looking to see if it was linkaged unit or a fly by wire unit. If it's fly by wire it might just be a blown fuse to the tranny solenoids. I guess I would maybe also get the drive wheels up off the ground and see if that made any diff.

it seems like a shifter issue. looked at one in a striped out race car there is a selinoid looking thing in the console with wires hooked up that goes to fuse #9 i pulled that fuse it does not help if i could get the top of the console off i could unhook the selinoid from the linkage get it out of park. but the shifter has to be moved back to get get the top off

was car in storage? if so gm models are bad for shifter cables seizing some are even 2 piece cables! (pick-ups etc) secure rear of vehicle on stands (for safety) and remove shift cable from trans. shift trans lever manually. if it moves your problem should be in the cable or column. hope this helps.

Try turning the key to the on position or starting the car. I don't recall needing to in my '96 but it's worth a shot...
