: How to idenfity rear gears?
SunnyZ28 Apr 29th, 08, 11:45 AM Hey guys, I have a '67 rear end in my 69. [Its stamped 67] as well as mono-leaf springs.. I want to switch it back to a 12-bolt and multi's eventually, but for now I was wondering if there was a way if I could find out what gear ratio was in the car? The #'s are faded so I cant tell from looking at the stamping.
jblakes Apr 29th, 08, 11:50 AM Jack up the rear, turn the wheel one time, count how many times the pinion turns.......
funbnme Apr 29th, 08, 11:52 AM Put rear on jack stands.
Put car in neutral.
Put a mark on the drive shaft where it connects to the rear end.
Be careful the car doesn't slam down on you.
Turn the rear wheel one revolution.
Count how many times the mark on the driveshaft goes around.
Just more than 4x is a 4.10
Close to 4x might be 3.73
etc.
funbnme Apr 29th, 08, 11:52 AM damn...I can never get the reply in first when this question comes up. :)
SunnyZ28 Apr 29th, 08, 02:07 PM Oh cool, thanks I'll go try that. I have no idea why the owner swapped out the '69 12-bolt for a 67 10-bolt and monoleaf..
What would an aftermarket 12 bolt setup cost me?
davidpozzi Apr 29th, 08, 09:38 PM 69's came with 10 bolt rears and mono leaf springs unless they had a high performance engine = SS or Z/28. Are you saying your 69 is an SS or Z/28?

David,
Did all base camaros come with the 10 bolt single leaf? Because when I bought my 307 X11 back in 1982, it had a 10 bolt with multi-leaf with 2.73's. I changed it out to a 12 bolt w/4.11 and I thought I was the first to swap it out....
RamAirDave Apr 29th, 08, 11:32 PM The lo-po 350 would have a 10 bolt with multi leafs. 307 and 327s would have mono leaf 10 bolts.

davidpozzi Apr 29th, 08, 11:35 PM According to my sometimes faulty memory, any non-high perf engined Camaro got the mono leaf/10 bolt setup.
Here's more info from CRG: http://www.camaros.org/suspen.shtml#MonoVsMultiSprings
davidpozzi Apr 29th, 08, 11:37 PM The 307 replaced the 327, I think it 69.

It had a 12 bolt multi before, the owner showed me pictures of it. He blew the rear and had a '67 parts car laying around and swapped the mono/10bolt in. He said something about he didnt think the multileaf would fit a 10-bolt so he just swapped the entire thing in. His story does check out, since when I crawled under the car, the rear was stamped '67.

huh?
are you saying that because the owner was cheap? lol.
Is it worth me swapping back to multi-leaf [stock] or aftermarket multileaf? or leave it mono? I have head mono has a lot of wheel-hop issues. But then again I have seen people run mono for racing..so I dont know..

LKQ = Like, Kind, & Quality
TJS69 Apr 30th, 08, 12:58 PM The higher performance 350's like the LM1, also came with a 12-bolt rear and multileafs, like mine did. :) The 307 did replace the 327 around the 1st of the year 1969. Lots of '69's with 327's.
