The bellhousing number you have is for a truck application. It has a 5-1/8" center hole and will not give the trans. front bearing support you need. It is not compatible with your TKO. It will take an 11" clutch, but you'll have to beat your floorpan where the clutch fork goes in for clearance. Don't use it. Try this site (www.teufert.net/other/chevy_starter_bellhousing_guide.htm) to get the casting number you need for your application. Basically you're looking for 3899621 with a 4-5/8" center hole casting or equivelent. There are lots of them out there on ebay. Good luck.

Read Tom's, (aka, DZAUTO), link first.

However, GM cast literally millions of the 460 486 bell housing to cover the larger flywheel and clutch in 1970's light trucks, both 6 and 8 cylinder. The problem is the Muncie SM 465 truck transmissions had a 5 1/8" (5.125) front bearing retainer, so you can't use it with the smaller car transmissions.

Luckily, a 4 11/16" x 5 1/8" bushing is available from Novak part # BR-4 (about $40) at www.novak-adapt.com or 877-602-1500.

Dennymac, (Dennis), also sells these here. He recently said “I appreciate the recommendation. If you want to include me as a friendly supplier of these adapter rings, I get $28US delivered for them. My contact information is cell phone 502-558-1043, and email is aguy@dennymac.com Best of luck.
Thanks again. Dennymac Dennis McLeod

I bought one of the adapter rings, and used the truck bell housing, which cost $25 at my local salvage yard, where they use the truck bell housings for door stops.

The 486 dust cover is GM part #340 254."

That's good info, but it still won't fit the car without beating the crap out of the toe pan. Don't want to be doin' that when there are so many correct applications out there.

Jim,

Please explain where a big-holed P/U truck b/h hit's our floorboards and why??

Only way I can see one hitting is if it has a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder mounted on it up by where the 3rd, (b/h mounted), Z-bar stud would go if it was used in a big car application.

Trying to learn is all.

Thanks,

I just pulled that same bellhousing out of my '68 RS vert small block and replaced it with a Keisler bellhousing and TKO500. The bellhousing is so large in outside diameter compared to the 621 style, that the floor needed to be beat in right where the clutch fork comes out of the housing to accomodiate it. Plus, it's really ugly under there. Fortunately, I was able to re-work the floor pan to remove the damage done by the shop that installed it. I've never posted a photo on here, but I could PM you one with your email address. Jim

Back again.

SB frame mounts will move a BB engine back tighter against the firewall and the 6-banger frame mounts farther such that the top b/h bolts almost can't be removed so maybe you don't have the correct frame and rubber mounts??

I can see where this may cause the b/h tunnel to wedge tighter, the farther back you install the engine..........

Stock whatever engine, I can't see a problem is why I ask.

pdq67, I don't think it has so much to do with the motor mounts or frame mounts as it just does with the shape of the B-H. My car has an HEI in it and it clears the firewall, so the motor is not set back too far. If you look at the shape of the 621 style B-H and other 10-1/2" style B-H, you see how quickly they taper back from the big diameter of the engine mount to the small diameter at the trans. mount. The 756 that '67 forever has doesn't do that. I'll send you pictures of both in the car if want to PM me you email address. The 756 BH just looks like it belongs in a truck. The reason thay are so cheap and used as doorstops as you accurately mentioned, is they just don't work well in the F bodies.
