Is it possible to use a 4L60e from a 1996 caprice lt1 in a 1996 camaro LT1 z28? I know that the tailshafts are different, but you can unbolt them and switch them cant you? Are the two transmission essentially the same? Thanks everyone for your help.

I believe them to be the same except as you say, the different length in tailshaft.

You can't swap tail shafts without gutting the transmission. I suspect you can use it just fine but there may be some custom driveshaft work required.

I was thinking it was the tailhousing that was different not the tailshaft? Been awhile since I messed with them but I believe the only difference in 4l60e tailshafts is 2wd or 4wd.

Thanks for all your help. Then if in fact the tailshaft is identical in the 2wd trans from a camaro and caprice and just the tailhousing is different, in theory I should be able to swap them out for one enother right?

The tailshaft itself can be purchased separately. I have seen them for sale on e-bay and other sites. The ad usually says 700R4 or 4L60 with "Caprice/Impala" mounting boss. The Caprice & Impala mounting boss makes the transmission easier to adapt/install into older vehicles.

to answer the original question- the Caprice 4l60e is a direct bolt in once you swap the tailshaft housings- which is about a 30 second job that simply requires you to take out the VSS, remove the 4 15mm bolts holding the tailshaft housing on, and pulling the housing off. then you just slide the F body housing on (make sure the big o ring is on), tighten the 4 bolts, and put the VSS back in.

Thank you so much everyone, especially novaderrik. I cant tell you how much that helps me. Its been real hard to find a camaro trans around me, but there is a caprice trans that is dirt cheap right by me for sale. Im glad to hear that all I have to do is swap the tailshaft housings and I should be able to bolt the trans right up. Awsome!!!
