Last year I shopped Summit for an Airgap. The fine print said NOT FOR first gen Camaro's. I called Edelbrock. They said it would sit too tall on my BBC. Then they learned of my Torquer 2. They said that they sell the latest and greatest but nothing greater that THAT! Honest. Edelbrock said that. To ME! I kept my Torquer2. My son just bought one for his new 496. They fit perfect with a stock ducted hood too.

I think the general consensus is BBC + Air Gap + Cowl Ind hood and you are fine. It is the non-cowl hoods where you start running into trouble.

thanks guys, i do have a 2" cowl, imma go with the air gap and deal with air cleaner assembly if there is a clearence problem, i havent picked 1 out yet either, i was think of something simple like this K&N one piece X-stream assembly http://www.knfilters.com/universal/X-stream.htm you can get it in standard or 7/8" or 1 1/4" dropped base. do you guys know if dropping the base of the air cleaner will interfere with the carb, imma get a holley 750, 4 barrel ,double pumper, electric choke and mech. secondaries...

All stock bases like mine pictured above, are dropped. You can just see the throttle body under it. Not sure how much it drops though. I suspect 2.5" or more.

I have the air gap and a aftermarket drop base air cleaner and I can already see ( I dont have my hood on yet ) that its not going to fit. I might try a stock air filter to see if I can get more clearance for my SS hood. I really didnt want to go to a cowl hood. Fingers crossed

Boy was I wrong! I just went and got my hood out of storage and here are pics, my SS hood fits fine with a AIR GAP intake. Im waiting on a hood latch so I cant get it down all the way but I put some putty on the air cleaner and pressed the hood down and I still had more than an inch clearance.

I had an RPM Air Gap on my 454 in my 69. It was under an SS hood with a drop base air cleaner, K&N filter and K&N filter top. I had the horn cut off of my Holley 850 and also on a 780 I used. It was so close to the hood that I broke a stud off of the bottom of one of the fake louvers but it was a great setup.
