Hey Everyone,

I dropped the motor in today! I'll post pics on the website tomorrow. Everythign went smoothly but I am installing the shifter now and am having trouble.

I have an M-21 4 speed and a Muncie Shifter repo from Heartbeat City.

I mounted the shifter on the crossmember and went to hook up the linkage. The shorter of the two took some coaxing but finally lined up but the longest is a good half inch too short.

Also - When I move the shifter lever, there is NO side to side movement and there is very little front to back movement. Now am I screwing something up here or are the shifters supposed to move more? The lever is almost horizontal when it is pulled back and at barely 45 degrees when pushed as far forward as it can go.

I really need some help on this one so please chime in with what you know.

Thanks in advance!

Bill

Unhook the linkages at the adjustment end of the linkage rod. I believe the trans may be in two gears.

Let's start with the shift levers on the side cover - they should point straight up and both be in neutral. The reverse lever on the tailhousing points down. With all levers in neutral, you should be able to turn the output shaft of the trans.

The shifter should be in its neutral gate/slot. There is a provision on the shifter box to insert a locating gauge, maybe a 3/16 inch drill bit? This aligns all the shifter levers.

Start with the reverse linkage and adjust the length so it will slip into the shifter arm and secure the linkage. Do the same with other two linkages, adjust them so they slip into the corresponding hole and secure. Remove the gauge/drill bit, shift the trans through all gears.

Here is a follow-up for anyone who searches on this in the future. The last post got me started in the right direction. There is a rectangular opening on each shifter rod plate that has to be lined up for lateral movement of the shifet handle. After I pulled the shifter and monkeyed the plates around, I got them lined up and put a 5/16 bolt through the alignment holes on the rod plates. It still seems a little short on the longest rod connection but I have to work with it a little more. I have included some pics for clarity.

Hope this helps someone in the future,

Bill
