: Are all 200-4rs good

I spent the better part of the day crawling up and down the rows at the local pick-n-pull. I'm looking for a 200-4r to put in my 68 convert, ~stock 327, ~250 hp. My intentions are cruising and highway mileage...not the track.

For all I've read, there are specific models that are better than others...I've got the chart with the tag codes. And I didn't find any of the specific "better" models. Quite a few OG and CT tags.

So, my question is...for my purposes, are all 200-4rs going to serve me well, as I won't be beating the snot out of it, or do I really need to keep searching for the chosen few? and will a GN rebuild kit bring a lesser model up to par?

thanks,
clay

all v-8 200-4rs were built with the same number of clutch plates inside. the monte carlo ss + grand nation trans have larger diameter band servo pistons + stiffer accumulator springs to firm up the shifts. A good shift improver kit should bring a lesser model trans up to par. imo , a 700-r4 is a better swap..200-4rs are based on the thm200, which was the Vega trans. That trans was so bad there was a class action lawsuit against GM. 700 r4s are based on the th350. Whatever OD trans you choose make you connect the detent cable + have it properly adjusted as it controls the pressure on these trans Wes

Clay, do a bunch of research on these. CZ and BR are the best to get. While the 200r4 did get bad press for early models, the later V8 performance models are good. Plus you dont need to shorten the driveshaft or cleanance the tunnel like the 700s. I have a CZ 200r4 in the shed to swap my PG out eventually.

If I could find a BR or CZ, I'd take it immediately. But I didn't see any of those...just the OG and CT. So I didn't bring one home...but if a rebuild, with the right kit, is going to get me to the same place, I'll head back to the yard, bring it home, and get to work.

As stated, I'm not looking to pound on this thing...just a good solid cruising tranny. So if all the issues with the "bad" models are only applicable one quarter mile at a time, I don't need to worry and will take what I can find.

thanks for all the thoughts/ideas on this,
clay

I've run two "AA" 200's and beat the snot out of both of them (just ran 11.99 with the second one). When we rebuilt the trannys we did add extra clutches...

There is no need to modify the tunnel for a 700r4.

I always thought the Buick GN's & T-Types had the best stock 2004R's?

I didn't think there were any modifications to the tunnel for the 200-4R either?

Maybe the most sought after, but not necessarily the best as that really depends upon the application.
