: P,B,T Firewall Stamps
68project Jan 4th, 01, 04:08 PM I am getting ready to re-paint my firewall but before I do I want to figure out what to do about the P,B,T stamps. I found a place that sells the stamps so that I could re-apply after fresh paint, but they want $85 for a set that I'll use once. Question is does anyone else own a set they want to sell or if I break down and buy a set does anyone else out there want them when I'm done? If we get ten people who need them it only costs us $8 each. Or maybe I'm just cheap and should quit whining? Thoughts?
onemorecamaro Jan 4th, 01, 06:08 PM I'll send you my stamps if you promise to send them back when your done. I'll even tell you how to do your stamping without smearing the paint all over and get a good crisp letter.

H-dog Jan 5th, 01, 04:56 AM Hey guys,
I am new to this, and ignorant. What are these stamps and where are the letters P,B,and T located on the firewall. I have a 68 drop top.

onemorecamaro Jan 5th, 01, 07:02 AM H-Dog, The stamps were only used at the Norwood plant. They were usually applied on both sides of the firewall and were applies in random order and sometimes up-side down. The colors also varied depending on who was stamping, when and what color they dipped the stamp in. There was also an assitional "F" stamp located under the cowl tag on some cars. Anybody want to guess what it stood for?
By the way I was serious about sharing my stamps. I have stamped many cars around here for people. Can't see dropping that sort of cash for a one-time item. If everyone who wants to use them sends me an e-mail and gives me they're ship to address and a close estimate of when they need them, I will coordinate shipping them. Each of you will only heed to pay for shipping to the next guy and we can keep track of where they are and if need be send in a rescue team if someone forgets to send them to the next guy.
As for the CZ stamp I made a stencil. I printed the letters on my computer using the correct font and size then cut it out with an x-acto knife and sprayed the alternator. Did the same with the vacumn advance cannister.

onemorecamaro Jan 5th, 01, 07:05 AM Wow, I gotta start using spell check or slowing down a bit. I guess that Super Chevy guy won't be calling me anytime soon.
Yesterday I could not spell Brain Sturgeon. Today I are one.

Mark C Jan 5th, 01, 07:20 AM The stamps were only used in the norwood plant, to indicate the car had been inspected for "P"aint, "T"rim, and "B"ody but the two available colors used, Orange and Green do mean something. Green indicates the inspection was done during the night shift, Orange indicates day shift. Have seen cars with both color stamps indicating some inspections were done during the day and others done later (or earlier) in production at night.
Stamps located on the firewall, usually a set
on either side. Two common locations are under the fenders (and therefore not fully visible in the assembled state) or above the heater box/brake cylinder. Sometimes the cars were stamped before the front fenders were installed and sometimes afterwards. This explains why the stampings are not consistently in the same place.
They can, and are stamped in any orientation.

pipeman Jan 5th, 01, 08:53 AM I have always wondered, being the P T B were used to inspect paint, body and trim, how they inspected it without the front cap or fenders installed? My 69 stamps were on the firewall behind the pass fender out of sight. Maybe the assembly sequence is different than you would normaly do when restoring a car.

Mark C Jan 5th, 01, 10:24 AM Paint, trim and body inspections were probably a function of Fisher Body not GM. If it was a GM function then both Los Angeles and Norwood plants would have the stamps. Fisher built, assembled and painted the bodys before they went to the GM side of the plant. The car bodies arrived from Fisher (through a hole in the wall between the two plants essentially)Already painted, interiors installed and with 95% of the body trim already installed but without the front clip (doghouse) installed. GM added the running gear, optional wiring, front end assemblies, and did any finish painting, like Z28 stripes, D96 fender stripes, etc.

68project Jan 5th, 01, 02:06 PM Onemorecamaro, YOU DA MAN, I would love to borrow your stamps and will gladly pass them on or back to you when done. In all fairness to you and your generous offer, I'll need to get back to you when I'm a bit closer to needing them, maybe as much as 1 month. A freak cold snap in FL has stalled all paint for the last 2 weeks. But as soon as we hit 55-60 deg again, the firewall is ready for fresh semi-gloss. My e-mail is KeWatsn@aol.com. Please drop me a quick note so I have your E-mail when I get close to needing them. I will definitely owe you one.
Bob Jenkins Jan 5th, 01, 04:55 PM Onemorecamaro, thanks for the offer and a great idea. I sent you and email. Lets us know how that L89 is doing....

Hmmm, time for an updated picture. This was last winter before my quarter century tear-down. That pump looks a lot nicer now.
