View Full Version : New 496" Track Results
BigRed-L72 May 15th, 08, 09:00 AM First time out with the new 496" in our 78 Camaro.
First off the car seriously needs suspension work.
It`s sitting on the fence and doesn`t know if it wants to be a road racer or drag racer
I say that because, not only does it have those long 3.23 GEARS it also has a Hotchkis frontend suspension kit with a big swaybar and stiff lowering front springs.
Out back it is also a Hotchkis multi leaf deal meant to lower the car.
So here`s the result...the Hoosier Drag Radial tires were aired down to 16 lbs cold. (I suggested 20 lbs)
Only got 2 passs worth mentioning, the first was a total traction failed debacle  (insert image of John Force here)
So I ended up telling him (son Jesse)..."just ease into it, let`s see the MPH...OK !?"
That gave us a little more to go on.
It was breaking up at the 1000 Ft mark and I think it has a low voltage issue and was sending the MSD 6AL into convulsions.
Picking the best of the incrementils from the 2 passes ended up looking like this:
60' ..... 1.65 Et (NO BURNOUT)
330' .....4.485
1/8 6.87 Et 102.64 MPH
1000' ....8.968
1/4........................... 10.74 Et 128.27 MPH
Track closes Friday for 8-10 months supposedly..may or may not give it another shot, not sure.
Just thought I`d share.

Your track closes in the middle of summer? that sucks, are they redoing the surface or something? I guess you do have year round racing in Fla so it's not as bad as if they closed the track around here in summer.

So...a 1.65 sixty foot and 10.74 ET with "road race" suspension parts, no traction devices, just drag radials with no burn out easing into the throttle? Sheesh, kind of makes me feel like my car is slow and inadequate....
ron498 May 15th, 08, 10:32 AM That is actually quite impressive. A 10 second road race street Camaro.
Nice job on the 496!

Thanks..You`re right, the 60' times are pretty weak.
The track is under going a major renovation supposed to take 8-10 months according to rumors.
It`s not real fun in a blazing S. Florida swamp in the summer here.

Thanks Paul, and your car is a long way from being "slow and inadequate" :)
The car does have Chassis Eng. traction bars but not too sure they`re doing much.

pdq67 May 15th, 08, 04:46 PM WOW!!
I can finally see how DRAG w/ D2k inputted into it for my mild 496/M-20/3.31 can say my '67 car should run like 10.5 at 130 IF it hook's and doesn't break!!
DARN these smaller BB's are powerful for the money!!
He, He!!
I would be happy w/ a low 11!!

Thanks...It`s my son Jesse`s car, it started out as a father son project about 14 years ago.
The trans is a JW built TH350 full manual, reverse pattern.
The converter is a tight 2800 or so Torco !
Paid $ 200.00 right from Torco, it has anti balloon plates too and has been in the car for years and years now.
We`ll find out how well it hangs in there with this new motor that`s for sure.
You have a sick ride!!!! I love it.
Thank you sir.
6D9 May 18th, 08, 05:49 PM Cool! How is the drivability with the bbc compared to the old 406sbc???
chris406 May 18th, 08, 06:20 PM Cool! How is the drivability with the bbc compared to the old 406sbc???
It sucks a lot more gas  The BBC is milder.
The brakes work a little better to.
