View Full Version : The Camaro goes to 2nd grade
South Side Goons & Hitmen May 16th, 08, 04:39 PM Yep, as a de-stresser I took the Camaro to 2nd grade earlier today, to pick up my son. He was shocked. The kid made a bee-line and gave me a big hug and was floored when he saw Dad's Camaro in the parking lot. I added lap belts & had rear shoulder belts bolted to the rear package tray to hold him in place. You should have seen the look on some of the parents faces as I stepped out of the car in a shirt, dress pants & tie (total business attire). It would have been a suit & tie if I was wearing my jacket. The cam duration is in the .290's which is pretty healthy for a 350 Mouse with a regular hydraulic cam. All the better, LOL!! The kid was scared of the car 12 - 18 months ago. Of course he was only 6 or 7 years old then. Now he loves the car, and was asking me to go faster. Sorry--not gonna do that with a 2nd grader in the back seat! He's no longer scared and he's become a total gear head after seeing the Speed Racer movie. He knows I worshipped that cartoon when I was a kid in the mid 1970's.
It was also great to see the look on some of the parents faces who were picking their kid up in their BMW's, Cadillac's & Mercedes. LOL:D Nothin' like a guy in a dress shirt & tie stepping out of a loud, big cam rumbling 1969 Camaro. Even some of the soccer mom's in their Mini-Vans took notice. The car has come a long long way since I bought it nearly 2 years ago. I thank all of you on this site for your help!
*****Life is short. Everyday I wake up and put 2 feet on the ground it's a good day. There is too much negativity out there in the world right now and I thought I should share something positive. I just got back to work and need to finish my day off over the next few hours.
Lastly there is nothing that relieves stress than a big hug from your kid, appreciating life, hitting the weights at the gym and then rowing through the gears in your 'Maro while the others jaw drops at the site of a guy who listens to Motley Crue & Def Leppard and gets out of his 1969 Camaro wearing a shirt & tie to pick up his 2nd grader from school. Too bad my business clothes now smell like exhaust fumes, LOL!! BTW, I don't have a radio in my Camaro. The only music I hear is that of a well tuned V8. Finally two years in the making and I can say I'm proud to own that old heaping pile of scrap metal. It even made power while stepping on it in 4th gear today!
Thanks guys & gals!!
P.S. All you tech guru's get ready---I'm going to have alot of questions before month end about where to mount this or that and what the best options for my car are.
P.P.S. Don't get mad if I spelled something wrong. We can't install spell check at work other than for e-mails.
X33D80 May 16th, 08, 04:54 PM That's a great story! Your son will remember things like this all his life.
dfahy68 May 16th, 08, 07:41 PM South Side,
What part of town are you in? I laughed at your story - I get the same reaction up here in Evanston, amidst the Volvos, M-B's, and Range Rovers. My wife's friends call her to ask "who's cool old car is that in your driveway?" Nothing like ripping through the gears in a gas-guzzling '68 Camaro while the tree-huggers stare in disapproval!
fireeater May 16th, 08, 07:46 PM Great story. How bout some pics?
JimM May 16th, 08, 07:59 PM Great story for sure, I pick up my 4rth grader in either the Camaro or the Vette every chance I get, it's big fun!
Camaro69RagTop May 16th, 08, 09:26 PM It is funny how children that young notices our older Camaros. A lot of times when Im cruising or going through a shopping center I see them pointing and telling their parents to look at my car.
RobSS1113 May 16th, 08, 09:42 PM I was embarrassed when my dad would want to drop me off in his 50 Ford and the 67 VW bettle. I remember him telling me when I was at that age 7 or 8, he said "one day you will appreciate old cars", and to this day I remember that line clearly and I LOVE old Cars. My parents still have the VW and the 50 ford and just recently I asked my dad if I can have the 50 Ford and he said "yes"!!
I'll take an old car over a new one any day !!:D
LukeSkywalker May 17th, 08, 12:28 AM Cool story, will have to use that one in a few years.
67 Convertible May 17th, 08, 05:13 AM Great story! It amazes me how little kids appreciate our cars. When I drive out of my neighborhood, little kids on their bikes or in their yards will always yell out "Cool Car!!!" or "Nice Car!!" They have no idea what it is, but they know it's old, different and looks and sounds good.
It's up to us to keep this hobby going and pass it on to our kids and grandkids. Hopefully they will appreciate the muscler car era as we have and our cars will live on forever.
camaroman7d May 17th, 08, 08:37 AM Very Cool!! I used to drop of and/or pick up my kinds in my Camaro. To this day my daughter has friends that ask her "Does your dad still have that blue car?" They could hear me pull up when they were in class. It's good for them. now if I just finish my Skylark before my son is out of school (4 more years).
jay'srs/ss May 17th, 08, 02:33 PM That's awesome! I used to love when my mom picked me up from middle school in her 69 Black RS. :beers:
69camarojoe May 18th, 08, 10:41 AM Cool story.
Back in 1992, a year after I got out of high school I drive my 69 to my high school to pick up my sister and cousin (who are both one year younger). I had a lot of ooh and ahhs, but there just happened to be some punks that were there picking a fight with another senior.
So the principal, who was a moron, called the police and the police though I dropped off 6 guys to beat the kid up.
My sister yelled at the principal ,which I thought was hysterical, but I told the principal and the police, "Do you think I would have a nie car like this and carry 7 people in it?" Hell No.
On a different note, I'll be bringing my car to the local Ronald McDonald house soon (as long I finishe it this week) to show it with other people from my car club. There is a boy that has been undergoing cancer treatment for a while now and he wants to get some rides in the nice cars :D
jackr May 18th, 08, 11:28 AM Even though the school is only 500 yards from the house.....my 5th grader loves the attention when dad picks him up in an old car. The louder the better he says.
novaderrik May 18th, 08, 08:47 PM i once had a kid come out of a Holiday store and just freak out when she saw my 74 Monte Carlo sitting there right outside the door. as her dad was trying to get her to get into the Volvo wagon, she just kept saying "look at that cool car daddy. you should get one like it with wheels like that". apparently, 5 year old rich girls like jacked up old Montes with Ansen slots..
he just said that he probably wouldn't, then gave me an evil look. he kind of had that "my other car is a Prius and i don't eat red meat" look about him.. she stared at my car out the window until they got out of the parking lot.
hopefully, my POS ugly mid 70's gas guzzler infected a youngster with some sort of appreciation of the way things were built in the old days.
DHONDAGOD May 18th, 08, 11:30 PM My 17 year old son and I went "cruising" friday night in our 69. Was kinda cool having kids on crotch rockets and rice burners checking it out.
Chris:cool:
Dutch69Camar May 19th, 08, 04:55 AM .....within a few years the story will be something like this: "dad: come on son, i'll drop you off with the '69....son: o no thanks dad...i'll just take the keys"....lol
BonzoHansen May 19th, 08, 08:07 PM My kids love it when I pick them up in the Z
bil1024 May 20th, 08, 03:46 AM I pickup the twins from kindergarden all the time, they get a big kick out of it! Daddys' race car! too cute!
kicka May 20th, 08, 07:02 AM The kids will remember. Took my first ride in my dad's 69 vette 38 years ago.

My first ride home from the hospital and he's been picking me up ever since. Still get tickled when he occasionally shows up at my work for a visit!
FresnoRS May 20th, 08, 08:45 AM My wife teaches 4th grade and every once in awhile she will drive either my '67 RS or my '87 Porsche. She always has a gaggle of 9 year old boys outside her classroom on those days.

thats awesome, thank you for doing this.
I wasnt able to get my camaro back on the road in time to give my son a ride, but I am sure going to be sure any "cancer kid" who wants to ride in it will get a chance.
mhubert1977 May 28th, 08, 01:03 AM Great story. My son is only 4 years old, but he loves waking up a 6 sat morn and helping daddy with the hot rod. I think it is very important to spend time with your childer and raise them yourself, not tv's and video games. I'm looking foward to the day I get to teach him to drive.
orange67vert May 28th, 08, 01:06 PM Thats a great story. My kids love it when i pick them up from school in my 67 vert. both girls oldest being 11 in 5 th and youngest in pre only 4, she's used to cry and run to mommy until this year. I bought her a simpson car seat and loves to ride in the camaro as she call's it. I plan on picking up my oldest and some of her friends on the last day of school in it.
