View Full Version : Best place to mount MSD Digital 6 Plus Box
South Side Goons & Hitmen May 16th, 08, 05:03 PM Hello All,
I replaced the MSD 6 AL box in my car with a Digital 6 Plus. The Digital 6 box is much wider from top to bottom and from the looks of it, it does not appear to fit over the heater box on the fire wall.
MSD tech support says to mount on the firewall or some place where the box will get air flow. The previous box (the 6 AL was mounted) under the glove box right by the heater vent inside the car. MSD Tech support does not recommend that as there is very little airflow and if the heater in the car is used (my heater control cables are frozen, so the heat won't work). Ok the question is listed below.
Question: If it's a 1969 Camaro with a 350 Mouse in it, would you guys just velcro tape the thing onto the heater vent in the car or mount it on the firewall. Right now it's sitting on the carpet on the passenger floorboard ready to be mounted.
Thanks!!
Greg
BlackoutSteve May 16th, 08, 05:13 PM I still have my 6AL, and with the current resto, I am now considering mounting it pretty-much where the RS vacuum tank would be.
I will make a small platform for it that use the vacuum tank's OE dimples in the inner skirt, and also fit 67-68 voltage reg rubber well-nuts on the platform to isolate it from vibration.
I expect that the the Digital 6 would fit there too, and still be accessable for adjusting rev limits and such. :)
Or, you could try the otherside where the receiver-dryer would mount..
zdld17 May 16th, 08, 05:49 PM The first 6AL I had, I mounted it just above the heater box , under hood, Some 10-12 years later it went out and I suspect it got water in it. I put the new 7AL in the same place but sealed the top and two sides, . There are other places to put it like under the fender , just below the heater blower, but if it does go out, it could be a pain to pull. Take your chances but it does have to have air flow.
RJBaileyrn May 16th, 08, 05:56 PM i DRILLED FOUR HOLES oN THE (oops) left inner fender near the top in the engine compartment, and mounted the 6AL with the rubber isolators.. It fit quite well, and I think there is probobly pretty good air flow there. I think it looks good there, and I have had zero problems in over a year. I felt that above the heater box on the firewall would receive a lot of header heat. Just my thoughts

DonCasanova May 17th, 08, 05:59 AM Replaced my 6AL box on firewall above heater with the Digital 6. Works great, but I was cussing MSD for not using the same mounting holes(more holes in firewall). Good luck..................DC
Old baldguy May 17th, 08, 06:07 AM South Side :You can see the corner of the box, just above the date in the picture ,stays nice and cool out of the way,(not that heat is a real factor) so its been posted here ,but yrs ago it was though to be,what you see was my Auto drag setup,Happy Motoring:)

camaroman7d May 17th, 08, 08:14 AM Mount it inside the car. There is no way on earth the inside of your car is going to be hotter than your engine compartment. No chance of moisture and/or condensation if mounted inside as well.

The digital 6 does fit above the heater box on my 68, see pics.
But I think it woud be better inside the car.
With the steel hood here.

X two....... I mount my stuff on the inside of the glove box door. If you think its gonna run hot just open the door. Easy to access too. I never understood mounting them under the hood

chriss69 May 19th, 08, 10:19 AM MSD 6-BTM, inside car on passenger side behind glove box, up out of sight. Reduced vibrations, heat and no moisture.

A+ yep thats were I would put mine. Just make sur eyou have no water leaks from either the cowl or windshield
BlackoutSteve Jun 6th, 08, 11:37 PM This is where I mounted my 6AL. Similar in size to a Digital 6.
I made a bracket and mounted it on the inner fender using the OE dimples, and used 67-68 voltage reg well-nuts & screws to isolate the 6AL from vibration.

sneakey pete Jun 7th, 08, 08:41 AM MSD has several notices not to mount in glove box. They claim no air flow. Maybe it's a marketing thing as no one can see the big MSD lettering. I hardly think so but one never knows. Seriously though I have mine mounted on the passenger inner fender. I feel the entire casing of the box is one big heat sink looking for air flow. In my humble opinion hot air flow will cool a lot better then no air flow (hot or cool) like in a glovebox. I have ceramic headers and a belt driven fan and have raced all day in 120 degree days without any overheating issues (well except for the tranny running hotter then I like). Just ran a 11.6 @ 120 with the old girl buzzing to 7300 at the end and the box works fine and is easy to get to, to do any adjustments on the rotery dials.
Cheers
