I recently purchased a 68-manual console kit from Rick's. I installed this in a car that had no previous console. I have a Muncie 4-speed. My questions is the plastic slider plate. I have the 68 assembly manual but can't quite figure out were this goes or whether or not I even need it. Can anyone help?

And... since I had the existing 4-speed the existing shifter boot was very stiff. So I ordered a new shifter boot (Rick's CP-40) to replace it. Second question is, a fellow Camaro friend said I could attach the boot to the underside of the manual shift plate (drilling 4-holes in the rubber boot) and between the retainer rather than to the hump.

Any comments about this method or should I attach it to the floor of the hump like a shifter without a console?

As always, you comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The boot got screwed to the floor just as if there was no console. The plastic slider fits in the plate channel so the plate slides with the shift handle.

I tried the "mount the boot to the underside console trick" didn't work, the rubber is too stiff and wouldn't go into 1st and Rev. ( my experience)
And I used a hole punch to make it look OEM too.

Because the slide-o-matic is such a poor design, most (myself included) just install a bigger taller boot on the floor. Hurst makes some nice boots.

I have a 67 and that slider in the console is noisey and a dirt catcher. I have been looking for a boot that will mount to floor and go up through the shift plate hole about 2 of the humps. I can't seem to find one. I'd sure like to know what you used. I think the hole for the slider is about the same on 67 & 68, 3x5-1/4. Thanks Bob
