View Full Version : Recommend a dialback timing light?
Melrose RS May 20th, 08, 09:14 AM I need to buy a dial-back light so I can get deeper into disti recurve mods. I want to graph and plot all the spring combo's from my crane kit vs. stock. I've heard not all dialback lights are accurate. Can anyone recommend a light that they've had good results with?
Thanks!
RockinRob May 20th, 08, 09:29 AM i have the actron digital light that works pretty good. Bought it at autozone for about $90.
does timing and rpm.

Everett#2390 May 20th, 08, 10:43 AM None, I use a standard timing light and use an old grade school pencil compass and set the compass for the distance of the h/balancer mark from 0° to 10°, as shown by the scale, and transfer the compass markings up to 40° BTDC. Then split the 10° into 5°.
rojo May 20th, 08, 10:57 AM I have a Craftsman. Tested it against a damper with timing tape and it was dead on.
77wolf10.85 May 20th, 08, 06:34 PM The lying Snap On dial back I threw into the Gulf of Mexico in 1988 or so was the last one I touched. It made a splendid kalooch as it went swimming.
I use a D-cell powered $69 light. No dial back. But I have been thinking about getting one. Not Snap. That 90 buck azone actron sounds like a buy if it doesn't lie. Snap used to be over 200. Probly all Chinee now.
camaro_fever68 May 20th, 08, 07:40 PM I have a digital OTC It's accurate and has a metal plug wire clamp instead of plastic. I've burnt my share of plastic clamps on the headers.

davidpozzi May 20th, 08, 10:25 PM For a bright light, try the MSD unit. I don't recall if it's dial-back or not but it sure had a bright light!!!
MSD ignitions fool some dial back timing lights.

DenRS May 22nd, 08, 06:11 AM I just bought an actron digital timing light from advanced auto for around $100. I compared it to my old craftsman timing light. It was dead on. The digital light is nice. The rpm feature is nice and I can use it to set my idle mixture screws on my edelbrock carb. I wouldn't use it with a msd box though.
blazerbob May 22nd, 08, 09:50 AM Craftsman Dial-Back and with MSD ignition its right on compared to any other timing light. Dial back saves me time and headaches! Everyone has their own preference and thats fine too! If Craftsman dies I'll buy another!

Bob, I also have the Craftsman dial back and had MSD, now Crane Hi-6 ignition, and all it does is bounce around. Most multiple spark ignitions(MSD, Crane, Mallory HI Fire) can not use a dial back. It states this right on the MSD website. It's a PITA. I have since started using my fathers standard timing light and the mark is steady as a rock. Just a thought.
Joe Harrison May 22nd, 08, 08:08 PM I had an electronic Snap-On light for 1o years or more. It was a great light and loved it but it was stolen when my shop was broken into last Dec.
I was going to buy a new one when I saw one of these Equus products and thought what the heck.
I have used it a few times and I still like my Snap-on but this light will do multi-spark and the snap-on would not, this light will also work with an MSD and my Snap-on would not.
I went to Oriellys and asked them to match the price of the light that Autozone was selling for $99.00 and they did, so I figure I got it for a fair price. I don't like the way you have to get the advance with this one as much as my snap on but it's still a pretty nice light and for the price I am not going to complain except for one thing. The battery connection clamps are cheap as heck.
You can get one from Summit for $110.00 You can step up the pro- model for $199.00 but I did not see a need for dwell readings and a storage case for the extra $100.00. I would like to have the case though!

Lonnie67 May 23rd, 08, 07:53 PM Just used a Craftsman dial back light on my car. Works fine with my MSD and it matches the degree marks on my damper.
