View Full Version : Good clutch?
Rookobird May 21st, 08, 06:16 PM I've done searches and don't find much on selecting a good HP clutch. I'm running a 69 w/mildly built 350, M20, 3:31 rear w/ posi. I will be driving all street w/ hot rodding.
What clutch are you running? I was leaning toward a Centerforce II. I like the idea of 60% more "grip" , but don't know how their pedal pressure is.
What clutch offers more grip than stock, smooth engaging and close to stock pedal pressure?
Thanks for your input!
John
osin68 May 21st, 08, 06:30 PM I have the Centerforce II dual friction and love it. The pedal is real smooth to push down. My engine makes up words of 550HP and never has slipped on me and that is out at the track with Caltrak's and MT Drag radial. IMO
Everett#2390 May 21st, 08, 08:04 PM For reliability, GM replacement. Never had a problem.
Hos68 May 21st, 08, 08:18 PM Best clutch I have ever run in my car. Youll love it.
pdq67 May 21st, 08, 08:29 PM I went w/ Summit's stock replacement Perfection/ZOOM kit!
I figure that since my stock clutch took that much abuse, why not!!! You can slip it as long as you don't OVER rpm it fine!!!
Over rpm it and you'd better have a scatter shield for a bell-housing b/c it can come unglued JUST like ALL of them can!!!!
Kinda like setting off a grenade under there!!

SunnyZ28 May 21st, 08, 08:36 PM I just threw a stock replacement from NAPA in.. Let's see how it holds up.
JimM May 21st, 08, 08:44 PM I went w/ Summit's stock replacement Perfection/ZOOM kit!
I use this too. The PP's been in there 7 years. I replaced the disc once just because, and a second time because I needed a fine spline for the TKO.
Clutch works great. Light and smooth, and solid as a rock.
eville May 21st, 08, 08:53 PM I had a stock replacement from NAPA, I couldn't get it to stop chattering.
My McLeod Street Twin is AWESOME!
69 Bowtie May 21st, 08, 10:26 PM Can't speak fo the rest, but I love my Centerforce DF. Pedal is nice and easy. I also have one in another car which has a 468 and it has never slipped one time.
smits67 May 21st, 08, 10:51 PM I run the Centerforce Dual Friction and love it. I drag race with it and drive it around on the street. It is very user friendly.
Dad just put in a Zoom kevlar clutch in his Chevelle. It is too early to tell how it will hold up, but it seems to be a quality piece.
Everett#2390 May 22nd, 08, 04:18 AM Lots of info here. I personally never had alot of good luck with aftermarket. One would slip, one had an uneven diaphram after being clamped, and another was out of balance.
I've always had good luck with GM replacement parts. It seems the aftermarket listened and changed their attitude.
Rookobird May 22nd, 08, 07:00 AM Thanks for all the replies! It looks like a good report for Centerforce. But also Zoom and stock
clutches. I think I'll try a Centerforce II.
Thanks again,
John

Badbird May 22nd, 08, 05:03 PM Hays Clutch....Borg & Beck style!....Exercise your left leg though!
X33D80 May 22nd, 08, 06:22 PM I have the Hays Street/Strip clutch and it does have a stiff pedal. I have been wondering what to replace it with when the time comes.
RamAirDave May 22nd, 08, 08:49 PM Ive installed CF II, CF DF, McCloud, Ram, and ACDelcos in the last couple years. All have been great except for the Mexican-made ACD. Drives good, but slips some when youre really getting after it.
Anything I can get from Summit/Jegs I just go through my local speed shop which is only a block or two from my shop. They recommended the McCloud for the car that we absolutely thrash, and the CF DF for a mild-moderate street car. Don't recall which McCloud it was exactly, but the pedal is good.
67 RSS May 22nd, 08, 10:08 PM Just installed CF II..great foot pedal compared to my old zoom- a real joy to drive.
No chatter..no horses or tire roastin on my resto however. Nothin' I hate more than a slipping clutch so went overkill for this setup (I think!).
Badbird May 23rd, 08, 11:28 AM I have the Hays Street/Strip clutch and it does have a stiff pedal. I have been wondering what to replace it with when the time comes.
The 3 finger, "Borg & Beck" style, are heavy spring pressure!.....If you desire a lighter clutch pedal feel then you'll need the "Diaphragm" style pressure plate:yes::thumbsup:
Rookobird May 24th, 08, 11:05 AM After pricing the Centerforce II, the Zoom MF looks a little better.
