Hello,

Do they sell the backs of the plastic part on the seats for a 69 camaro? Mine are black but have a ton of scratches and show white through them. I was thinking of painting them (not sure about the paint match) but was wondering if they sell that piece. The seat covers are fine and easy to replace but those backs looked hacked up right now and I have to change em.

Readily available from any resto house. I had a set, and compared them to an original set...they looked darned close!!

I've looked up a few places. Do you know what the exact name of the part is? Seat backing? I had the same issue describing "Louvers" without knowing the name for them.

"Seat Back Panels" available from most of the vendors. HERE'S RICK'S (http://www.rickscamaros.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=IN%2D62&dept%5Fid=3429).

Take them into one of your local interior shops and ask them about a paint that you can either have them apply or get the name of it from them and do it yourself. Not sure what it is called, but it bonds with the plastic once cured and does not scratch off. I had mine redone when I had my new set covers put it, and they look as good as new. Any scratches you might have are still there, but not noticible at all because they are entirely black. This is alot cheaper than buying new backings, and worth looking into. I had the same dilemma, and now am completely happy with going this route.

PUI supplies them. Just got a set for my Camaro but have not opened the box yet. If yours still have good grain pattern i would just repaint with SEM

I ordered a set from NPD because Rick's no longer sells the orange ones. It cost around $88 with shipping included. They look ok, but they don't fit as well as originals. Same with most repro parts,I guess. The originals are angled about 10 inches from the top and repros are straight, so you can see under the corners slightly when installed. Also the bottom holes don't line up and the mounting tabs inside at the top are too shallow making the whole thing slightly too short. After I got them, I tried this with the originals: They looked to have about 1/32 inch of scabby dead plastic covering the top from age and wear I guess and previous owner had tried to paint them unsuccessfully. I took a utility knife razor and carefully scraped them. I scraped about 1/4 of the seat back at a time dragging the razor in one direction only, skinning them if you will. Don't sand; that will ruin them. I continued skinning leaving the edges for last until I was down to the fresh plastic. What I ended up with was a clean, and I think attractive piece, The drawback is it removed all of the madrid graining, but that was the scabby layer anyway. Its far from perfect, but it is the original and I put them back in even though I bought the repros. If I ever find a process to apply that madrid grain back on I'll do it. Bill

Mike, two more ques, then I'll let you go.

Does SEM have a colour that approximates "Ivy Gold"? Or would I have to go with a different colour? Say a darker green?

And...Would I have to prep with this mentioned paint line? Was told by one of the other TC guys that I may have to lay down a primer first if I apply a paint to the backs.

Thanks,

Thanks,

captSEM makes lots of interior trim colors. You can also have a color matched if you buy it in quart form.

You always have to prep a part for paint for proper adhesion. That does not mean you have to prime it though. The necessity to prime would depend on what color you are covering. You don't want to apply to much paint or you will lose the grain texture.

Another option for renewing your original seat backs is to skin them with some new back madrid vinyl. Just make sure use a good high heat/high tack glue and prep your surface well for the glue to adhere. I've done this several times through the years and it works very well.

Mark, Can you explain what that is a little more, and where do you get it?

I've searched high and low but can't find the screws that hold the bottom of the seat back panel to the seat. Does anyone know who sells these, or alternatively, what the dimensions on the screws are? Thanks in advance.

Hi Bill,
Yes, you'd more than likely have to purchase the vinyl at an upholstery shop. Madrid was a standard grained vinyl for the early Camaro's and it is offered in several colors, especially black. I've found that through my 30 years of doing custom interiors applying seat vinyl over the original seat backs is a much nicer way of renewing them, rather than painting them or ordering the re-pop versions, (which never fit like the originals.) If you opt to apply new seat vinyl to the original seat backs make certain you use a really good glue, (something that can withstand the heat.) Personally I purchase my glue in 5-gallon pails and apply it with a glue gun but, hi-temp glue is still available in the can and can usually be purchased at an upholstery shop or your local automotive paint store. If you need any further assistance feel free to give me a shout.

Jerry,
The stock screws should be 1/2" in length and have a #8 shaft, with a built in washer. You can also substitute a #8 shaft with a 3/4" length. If you find the #8 screws are a bit loose you can always go to a #10 shaft with a #8 shouldered head on it. Some of the larger hardware stores should carry these or one of your local upholstery shops.
