is it possible to use or convert a 700r4 transmission
the 700r4 is out of a 96 van with a 5.7
I was wandering if this could be used or converted to use on my 89 5.7?..

no it isnt a cross over. the 96 is computer controlled. while your 89 is controlled by a cable. unless you taking all computer controls. or get a manuel shift valve body for it.

Bill, are you positive on this?
I know 96 passenger car transmissions are electronic, and are a 4L60e...
But would a truck trans be electronic too?
He does refer to it as a 700r4, is he incorrect there?
Just something I don't know for sure is all...

it is a 700r4 out of a 3500 5.7 l vendura van 1996,
i guess i should measure it?
or maybe a 4l60e?
they both look the same?

I'm pretty sure the conversion is possible if it is a 700r4.

A 700r4 will have a machanical shift linkage, a mechanical cable hookup to thew carb linkage (TV cable) a small electical connector for the convertor lockup, and a conventional speedo cable hookup coming out the side of the tailshaft.
4L60's also existed in that time frame, and are very similar to the 700r4.
4L60e's came in around that same time, my 93 LT1 vette has one. They are similar in physical appearance to the 4L60 and 700r4, but are electronic shift controlled by the ECU. My vette does NOT have a transmission control cable on the throttle body.
I've never actually seen one outside of a car, nor studied the hookups, and would look forward to some clarification on all this from Bill or another trans guy.

yes jim they are very much looking the same. difference is a 700-r4 has a yellow looking square plug on drivers side of trans with 3-4 ends in there for lockup. the 4l60-e has a plug on passenger side of car. that plug is round gray color with about 13-15 pins in there for electronics. you want the 4l60e-3 kit. http://www.transgo.com/rpg_generalmtr.php
