I'll be doing quarter replacements etc. I'm sure I'll need filler of some kind but I'm not familar with any of the products collectively known as "bondo". So what should I buy and can I get it at O'Reilly's or AZ or do I have to go to an auto paint supply store?
In addition, my son brought home his HS metal working class project which is a cabinet base made of angle iron. He wants to use bondo to smooth the joints where he can't get a grinder into. Is whatever I will need going to work for him too?

Yes on the Metal Project build up in small amounts better to have to add another coat of filler than to sand two thick of a coat off......
There are many Bondo's and each has its +s and -s. Evercoat is a good line and as with your paint stay with the product line you decide on for the "glaze" (final filler for sand scratches etc). Not to be confused with the old school nitrostain (red putty).
Have fun and do not think that plastic filler will take care of rust it will not. Clean metal....contaminate free.... is the way to go before you apply the filler....you will be happy you did.
There are others that may disagree but I have had sucess with following that outline.
good luck

Go to a 'paint store' - they have the good products and expertise to help you select the right ones
I tend to use Evercoat "Metal-2-Metal"* for most my direct to metal work after repairing/replacing panels etc.
I prefer the "Rage"/"Rage-Gold" products for most applications over my Epoxy surface coats.
I think you will like both of them for the majority of work you'll need to smooth on your car.
Try a can of The 'Metal-2-Metal' on you son's cabinet to get used to working time of the product and then proceed to your car.
Always keep "coats" under 1/8" of an inch to prevent shrinkage and cracking problems.
* = this product is 'metalic silver' in color and tends to look like "lead" work when being worked, looks better to the "Lookie-Loos" than the blushy "bondo" colors of most fillers - always seems to 'wow' them more in JMHO's :D

Go to a paint supply store and ask for RAGE GOLD. Should be about $25.
You can thank me later

Good to know. I see this at O'Reilly's: 3M - BODY FILLER (GL-PREMIUM FILLER)
I'm guessing that is what he needs but I have no idea at this point what I'll use. I am thinking I will use PPG or DuPont BC/CC. Would this 3M product not be compatible? I hate to spend $40 for a gollon that he will ony use a few tbls.
I see this also at O'Reill'ys: EVERCOAT - RAGE FILLER (GL-RAGE GOLD). It's $49 gal! If that's what I'll be using I don't mind. My son is sanding down the cabinet right now and he just asked if we have any primer. I told him if he could wait a few days I will buying a spray gun and epoxy primer etc for replacing my floor pans but he's in a hurry and went to check out the old rattle cans of rustoleum or BBQ grill paint we have in the shed from when I spray painted my headers!
How about quantities of this stuff. Considering I'm going to be painting entire car after repalcing floors, trunk center pan and quarters, How much of each of these should I get: Metal-to-Metal, RAGE GOLD, Epoxy primer, weld thru primer.
And again let me ask about my compressor set up. Do you think I can spray epoxy with only a water separator coming right out of the tank (after regulator actually) or do I need a drier or filter of some kind? I think I will need those before BC/CC but I don't want to spend the time plumbing all that up right now.
I just called the only true "auto paint" store we have in the area. Rage Gold is $38/gal with that being the smallest. Metal-to-metal is $27/quart.
