Strippin down the trunk area last night in prep for sending the car to the blaster, I found a nasty little treasure.

I was pulling out the rear lighting harness and it was down between the trunk floor and the rear quarter panel. Old college brochures and faded bits of paper that were moulded and soiled came up with the wire. (no build sheet came out) and I realized I didnt remember there being a gap here.

Looking at the pile of cra.... I mean junk, there were mouse turds too. Must be a nest down there, which probably means mouse pee, which means corrosion most likely.
My car is pretty straight and very little rust. I really dont want to cut out the floor to clean this area.

Any ideas on how to get in there to clear it out and treat it?

Does anyone have a photo of what it looks like under there?

What is involved in removing the extension for cleaning then replacing it?

this is a 1967 car.

Thank you in advance.

The extension and the dropdown are welded to the main pan and I believe to the framerail then from the dropdown to the rear of the quarter. Its been a while since I had mine apart. I have some pics that I have to dig up but there should be one or two in my signature. See if you can borrow a good scope and take a peek down there for a piece mind.

Isn't there a drain hole on the bottom or a plug underneath on the side in that area? That may help with flushing it out, but the hard part will be knowing that you have removed all of the debris.

In these photos, you can see what the drop off and rear quarter look like on a 69. I think that area is similar on a 67.

There is a space between the rear quarter skin and the trunk extension, usually only about 3/4". There should also be a drain plug in the outer wheel house. Cleaning that is gonna be a bear but you need to get everything out. You might be able to bend the trunk extension up enough to get a shop vac nozzle in there.

Good luck.

Update - borrowed a video boroscope today, it is nasty in there.

All kinds of treasures. Thanks chuck for the idea of bending the extensions up, I am going to try this first.

thanks to everyone for the details and such, I see what I am up against. Im now wondering about all the other cracks and crevices in the car.
