: How to put in new kick panels...
ocean1 Jun 6th, 08, 06:52 PM Any secret or something to make this easier? Just put in new carpet and cant get the new kick panels in. Its a non AC car but to get the things in the vent holes omg.. These go over carpet right?
Thanks!!
67 Camaro btw ;)
JimM Jun 6th, 08, 07:10 PM Well, if nothing else, the carpet goes under them.
They generally go in much easier than they come out. Don't forget to caulk reall good around the vent hole ans the base of the tube in the kick panel!
Mkelcy Jun 6th, 08, 07:54 PM I've found that a lot of cursing seems to help.
Hatman Jun 7th, 08, 07:52 AM You should try to put them in before the carpet, then tuck your carpet underthe kick panel.
Burntove Jun 7th, 08, 09:57 AM Just put mine in and yes alot of cursing was involved,I had to remove the emergency brake pedal assembly and slide them in at an angle from the floor up, it was a real pain in the butt.
go2fast Jun 7th, 08, 05:01 PM Grind about 1/8" off the inner rim (all the way around) and they will go in much easier. There is no reason for them to be so tight.
ocean1 Jun 7th, 08, 11:16 PM Thanks go2fast, between grinding down the lip a little and the cursing I finally got them in.. Wow those are a pain in the butt. Had to move the Ebrake like he said above and the button for the bright switch. Even the other side was really hard. Didnt do the caulking around the vents. I was just happy to get them in. It would have been a mess in there with the added caulk spred about.
thanks guys!!

I hope you NEVER get her wet then. No getting caught in the rain, and NO washing.
The drain system on our cars takes any/all water that comes thru the cowl vents (and that's virtually every drop coming up off the hood or draining off the windshield) flows down over the sides of the cowl (under the front fenders) and washes over the tubes on the kick panel vents before entering the rockers and draining out the back...
Ever see or hear about a car with rusted out front floors?
Those cars had leaky kick panel tubes.
I'd suggest you pull them again and caulk em. a 1/2" roll of plumbers putty will do it.
68Holdon Jun 8th, 08, 10:16 AM Jim M is dead on. I put new ones in my car last Saturday then I gave it a bath. Used the car over the weekend and everything was fine. Put the car in the garage for the week and didnt touch it until yesterday. I get in the car and it stinks to high heaven. Couldnt figure it out. Started looking around and my carpet was soaked by the kick panels!!! Must have sat in the hot garage all week and roasted. So needless to say mine are coming back off and going to be put in correctly.
ocean1 Jun 8th, 08, 11:29 AM Oh no............ #%@# any way to get to them any other way than taking them off? I would almost rather pull a fender
X33D80 Jun 8th, 08, 11:35 AM Like the two of you I had to pull mine back off to put more sealant on them. It was a bear, but easier to do the second time around. There is very little on the car that wasn't assembled at least twice.

Nope, sorry. I shoulda been a lil more insistent on my first post, and put in the big "WHY" as well. This is a common thing, comes back around every year or so. I too have been bitten by the "wet carpet syndrom."
Dale8346 Jun 8th, 08, 03:17 PM Just be glad you don't have A/C.
You think it is hard now, nightmare if A/C.
Pull them off and do them again, or don't wash your car the whole year and wait till the winter to do them again.
Just think of how good you will be at replacing them now!!!!!
Good luck!!
