Jerry MacNeish recently inspected, certified, and appraised my #s matching 1968 RSSS 396. It was an honor to meet someone of his stature in the 1st Generation Camaro industry. What a wealth of knowledge!!! He was very professional and honest as he inspected the car. I thought I knew everything about my car, well, I learned a few new things during the two hour long inspection. He went over my vehicle with a fine tooth comb, guess that was why I was paying him. Received all of his documentation today and it was very thorough, from verification of the drive train and components to listing out the minor deficiencies.

I would highly recommend his services, especially if someone doesn’t have the original paperwork. Guess this would be the next best thing!

Thanks Jerry!!! I appreciate you taking the time to inspect my car and answer all of my questions.

Tim so what was the magic number. I had mine done before the frame on restoration and it came in at 46,000. Its always a good thing to have the appraisal and also a pay off dollar amount from your insurance in writing.

The car isn't what I call heavily optioned but did find out that it has some rare features.

BB w/ AC (all original)
Black exterior/Red Interior
Seat headrest (original)
Deluxe Steering Wheel (original)

As far as the appraisal, I've got to call my insurance company Monday and up the agreed value substaintially, it is currently at $55K.

so you are saying the appraisal is "substaintially" greater than $55k?

being black is cool, paired with a red interior makes is different than most others, you won't see another like it at a show for sure

Yes, appraisal is much higher than my current "agreed value" with the insurance company.

Yea, the black/red combo is rare but the headrest is even more rare with only a little more than a couple thousand produced in 1968. Jerry informed me that an original black SS396 is rare and a very desirable color. I like the black but it is sooooo hard to keep clean!

Awesone car!

I'm sure the white stripe is correct. Could it have been ordered red instead so it matches? Icing on the cake.

Either way, awesome car!

I don't know the black exterior color production #s for SS396, just going by what Jerry wrote in his report.

"This SS396 Camaro is nicely restored and the fact that it's an original black exterior SS396 makes the vehicle rare"

Maybe he'll see this post and comment.

Not sure the stripe could have been ordered red. I think the only option for a early 68 black car was white. Evidently the stripe was correct, if not, Jerry would have noted it in his report, he doesn't miss anything.

Black was only available up to January of 68 making the color rarer then other colors.
Also the D91 stripe (bumble bee) was replaced by the D90 in January of 1968.

Pretty nice car.

Do you mind me asking a ballpark figure for the certification of a car by Mr. Mcneish? I am sure travel, lodging, and other costs play into it, but just a idea of what I am looking at. I have the original paint L89 with 18,600 miles, build sheets, protecto still in warranty book, dealer prep papers, etc. I think it would be great to have him go over it for not only insurance issues, but to find out if anything needs attention, thanks.

The inspection/certification/appraisal service is currently $300 plus travel expenses, which I thought was reasonable. Email Jerry, he'll give you an approximate cost to travel to your location.

Thank you, and yes, it sounds extremely reasonable. I think it would be wise to get a group of car owners together and do a bunch in the time he would be here. That way he will make a good wage with multiple cars, and we could share the expense costs, kind of win, win. I definatly would have a major barbeque with the best food this Itallian/Irish boy put together for him and the participants..................yup, fatten ol Jerry up!
