Hey gang,
I got a line on a newly rebuilt TH400 with a shift kit, new torque convertor with 2500 stall, B&M Quarterstick shifter and crossmember for $500 from a reputable person. Seems like a good deal (is it???) and I am considering purchase to convert from both the Powergluide to TH400 as well as column shift to floor shift.

What else do I need to consider conversions of these items? Shorter/longer drive shaft?
Different U-joints?
Different shifter linkage or will B&M linkage cable be fine?
Should I order crossmember from good company just in case the one that comes with it is incorrect?

Should I do it myself on my back in garage or consider taking it to someone? (is it worth the $$$ to have professional do it?)

Thanks in advance for your input and experience in making this conversion. - Michael

Assuming the crossmember is correct it should be fine and I would use it. The driveshaft will need to be shorter and you will require a larger yoke made for the TH400. Make sure the TH400 is the Chevy pattern not the BPO type. You will just have to work with the U-joints once you have the yoke and driveshaft in hand. The TH 400 is quite heavy as compared to the Glide so be prepared with a jack etc to do the install. That should get you started.

TH400 in a first gen came only behind the big blocks, which are offset approx. 1 inch to the passenger side of the car. If you use a "TH400 crossmember" for a 67-69 Camaro, it will put the trans tailshaft at an angle (away from centerline of car) when used with a small block. You can cut the mount pad off and relocate, but...

Are you running or planning for HP levels that make the TH400 a good idea? A TH400 takes more HP to turn than a TH350, so unless you are shooting for big big power, a TH350 is a better bet. You can use the Glide crossmember and driveshaft, and because small block cars were available with TH350, the parts to swap are easier to figure out.

Turbo 400 takes 45hp
power glide takes 18hp think my hp # are pretty close, so keep this in mind.
