I know its a Firebird, but since its almost like a Camaro and the question is sort of generic, I'd thought I'd ask...

A buddy of mine has an old 69 Firebird from high school that has been sitting out in a field for the last 25 years. He said that its in really bad shape, but I have not seen it. He was attempting to send the entire car to salvage when someone told him that he should consider other options and he asked me what to do.

I know the front glass is out so the soft interior pieces are probably gone. It still has the front suspension and rear end, etc. and most other pieces and glass. I suspect that the entire body shell is probably pretty far gone, but won't know until I have a look. I also know that there are a lot of parts specific to the 'Bird like taillights, etc. that might be hard to find.

I told him that at minimum that he should strip the car if the body is totally shot and see what he can get for some of the harder to find parts on Ebay or Craigs List. Or, perhaps someone might want to make an offer for the whole thing and have parts (cowl, firewall) that you can't unbolt but can cut off and use on a Camaro.

Also, I don't know what is customary to do with a Vin or cowl tag when you send a car to the final resting place. Is it OK to remove these and transfer them in the future to a Dynacorn, or does the destruction of the car body by a crusher also crush the title ? He has the title and its a Texas car.

Any thoughts on advise I can give him is appreciated as this is not my area.

Thanks

-Kevin

I would just post it on ebay as is. Someone will buy it for parts.

Usually when a vehicle gets turned over to a yard, the title and VIN tag get turned over to DMV by the yard. Yard signs off the car title it has been crushed.

Or as Tim suggests, ebay it. There are small businesses whose job is to sell whatever you want sold for you. They do pictures, texting, and shipping & packing when the item sells. Of course, they do it for a fee, 10% I think.

Kevin,
If the doors are useable I believe they are exactly the same as the '69 Camaro. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, the doors on the firebird are the same as the camaro. If they are in good shape they are worth a few hundred apiece. Even if they aren't in good shape all of the internal pieces, including the glass, has value. The 69 Firebird instrument carriers are worth some money. The stainless around the front and rear windows are the same as 67-69 Camaro and have value. Some fo the nose pieces on the firebird are very unique and not easy to find. The seats are the same as 69 Camaro. Parting a car is sometimes more trouble than it is worth. I would agree that Ebay would be a good option for the entire car.

Every state is probably a little different in how they want salvage cars handled. I am not sure about the Texas laws. I am sure your local Motor Vehicles could answer that one for you.

1st gen Firebirds only

don't suggest what cjm465 said to do...you might get lynched!:D

they now reproduce the '69 'Bird instrument carrier so not worth what it was.

Console is unique to birds...especially if MT - good money there. Dash pad is one year only. The center link, pitman arm and idler arm are also unique to '69 birds. front inner fenders are '69 only and not reproduced, Firebird shaped marker lights can be good pieces too. I've been told a lot of '69 Firebirds have fast ratio steering boxes...so check that out. Gregg is right about all the cross over stuff to Camaro and about the front end pieces, especially the Urethane head light cushions and the urethane filler right above the front bumper - if it really has been in a field in texas for 25 years then they are probably wasted but you never know.

Definitely dont just send it for salvage. Putting the entire car on ebay is a good option. IF someone has the patience and time parting it out is not a bad option. For instance, i just sold a 69 Firebird dash carrier w/gauges on ebay for $400. $300-$400 here and there starts to add up.

About 25 miles from San Antonio. I'll be out all weekend, so I won't be able to reply any further until Sunday or Monday.
