View Full Version : Mono to Multi
SunnyZ28 Jun 18th, 08, 12:03 PM Hey guys, I made a post a while ago questioning about this, but I have more questions.
My car has mono-leafs on it right now [1969].
The guy who had it had a 67 or 68 parts car, and for SOME reason swapped the old Multi's to mono leafs.
I need to know what I need to swap it back to multi.
I also got a 12 bolt out of a '69, but it is set up for mono leaf springs.
The rear end in the car is a 10 bolt, that is stamped 67 [from the same parts car I am guessing].
Now I have been told that I should just bolt the new 12 bolt in to the mono's because it is already set up for that..
The problem is that the car even with the 10-bolt has a lot of wheel hop under hard acceleration.
Another question is that I would like to get my transmission rebuilt, [4 speed] as the reverse and downshifting into second grinds slightly. Is there any overdrive transmissions that will bolt into our cars?
I was really looking at an LS1 T-56, but I was told there is no way that will fit in our cars/ bolt up to a normal SBC. That would be amazing to have. The gears in the rear end are 3:73:1 so OD would be nice.
Rodder Jun 18th, 08, 01:59 PM Do the 12-bolt with a set of 3-leaf multis. See this thread in the Suspension forum: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=122050
As for the trans, who told you that you couldn't use an LS1 T56? All you need is McLeod 8-207 adapter for your old bellhousing and 8617 extended pilot bushing. And a new crossmember, extend the shifter hole 4in farther back, shorten the driveshaft, and switch to an electric speedo (or use a CableX box for a mechanical speedo). 3.73 works really nice with the LS1 T56.
400bird Jun 18th, 08, 08:12 PM Yup, a t-56 has been put behind a number of SB here, use the search function.
Rodder, do you have the part numbers memorized for when this comes up? Truly amazing.
SunnyZ28 Jun 18th, 08, 08:59 PM How would I swap the spring perches to multi on the axle?
Also what do I need to do a complete swap back to multi's from mono?
and why 3 springs?
I've been told 4 springs are better than 5's..
But no one has even mentioned 3's before..
mike p Jun 18th, 08, 10:28 PM The 3 leaf springs usually mentioned here are mono leaf replacements; you can use the mono shock plates, etc. I swapped out original mono springs for the 3 leafs on my 10 bolt. There are lots of posts on the 3 leafs in the brakes/suspension section of the forum. Some people bought theirs from J.C. Whitney, so they are often called JCWs....
SunnyZ28 Jun 19th, 08, 01:09 PM Do they help wheel hop?
How would you compare the 3 leafs to the 5 leafs in terms of handling / preventing wheel hop / traction?
fishin4info Jun 19th, 08, 01:10 PM I also got a 12 bolt out of a '69, but it is set up for mono leaf springs.
Thats weird cause All 69 camaros with 12 bolts came with multileaf springs from the factory. Monos would be correct for the 67.

Nope, remembered I had seen it discussed before, did a search, didn't see it, googled it, found them in a thread on pro-touring.com.
pdq67 Jun 19th, 08, 04:53 PM I have JCW's 3-leafs on my car now, BUT I added my second and third leaf's from my old worn out '68 'Bird's 5-leaf multi's to better balance out my about 525 pound front coil springs!!
No more than a cheap set of Lakewood slapper-bars and a pair of coil-over, shock overload springs BOTH tuned side to side for shock pre-load ans slapper bar snubber open space!
If you will take about a Sat. afternoon to tune both, your car will leave like a "rabbit outta the chute at a Dog Track"!!
Been there, done it!

Maybe it was out of a '68..I thought 69 though..
It's a totally rebuilt unit though. POSI / 3.73, new axles etc.

So did you end up with 5 springs total? [You said you added two] or you took two out and added those two?.
I really have no clue about this stuff, so Im sorry for all the dumb questions.

I now have h-d 5-leaf multi's under her.
It sit's way too high, just about right for I figure 295 to 305/50-14 tires like my old L-60's are at 298/53-14 w/o needing coil-overs. OR big real slicks.

Hotchkis and Global West both designed their leaf springs to eliminate with wheel hop and increase handling.
I believe both these are 3 leafs, but I am not sure on the Global West ones.
And you will not be a mile in the air like PDQ's 3.. er.. 5 leafs.
