My buddy picked up a 70 camaro and is trying to get me to buy it from him. He knows I`ve been looking for something and low on funds and this car was kinda a rescue and he`s willing to sell it to me cheap just to help me out. Anyway, he said it`s a factory 4 spd car and it still in there. It also has factory a/c and a target master 350. Would this be a muncie or could it be a saginaw? I don`t really have any other info on it and I haven`t seen it yet.

if its a 4 speed its most likely its a muncie. saginaws were usually used in lower horsepower cars such as the 327 and down from there. being a 350, it is not a base model car which had a 3 speed. also, im not sure if a saginaw 4 spd was even offered that year...

If it was a lesser V8 than the L48 SS350, and it is original, it could be a Sag.

The linked info doesn't call out the trans by name, but 2.54 1st is a Saginaw 4-speeed, and 2.52 first is a Muncie wide ratio, 2.20 is a Muncie close ratio.

Thanks guys. I`m going to check it out this weekend so I`ll look under it to see if it`s a aluminum case or iron.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I looked at it but it was still on the trailor so I couldn`t look under it. It does have a console if that matters and the shifter has a stock looking chrome/silver ball with no shift pattern on it. I`ve seen that style before on stock shifters but I don`t know if it`s a sign of anything.

I wouldn't let a saginaw or muncie trans issue stand in the way of buying the car if you like it. Sounds like your buddy is giving you a good deal on the car anyways. If you like the car, buy it. Putting a muncie back in the car will only be a small part of the total cost of the car by the time you factor in everything else.

It`s not stopping me, just curious what it is because I`ve heard that saginaws aren`t very strong and I`m currently building a 350 that will be somewhere around 350-400hp depending on the heads and cam I use. He is going to give me a great deal on it and while it is a project, it`s not a bad start. Needs seats and some body panels but it`s all there other than that. And it`s not afactory a/c car, it has a dealer installed aftermarket unit. It`s factory orange with black interior.
