: GMPP 572 in a 1969 SS
X-22 Pilot Jul 20th, 03, 09:27 PM Hi all,
Could you tell me what would be probable installation problems with this motor in a 69 camaro? I know it has a tall block. Will this engine hit the stock windshield washer motor? I don't have a brake booster because I'm looking into the hydroboost set-up. Do I need custom headers? I have a Gm cowl hood so I don't think I'll have clearance problems there. Any comments would be appreciated.
thanks all

camcojb Jul 21st, 03, 05:06 AM If it doesn't it will be very close. You'll also have to remove the wiper motor to remove the drivers side valve cover. A Detroit Speed wiper motor would eliminate this issue.
Biggest problem will be hood clearance. Yes, it will fit under the cowl hood, but you won't be able to get any type of decent sized air cleaner on there. And with a 572 (or any big block) you need a decent diameter AND height on the filter. An aftermarket hood will solve this, but don't know if you want to go that route. Believe me, it's an issue. You get a short small filter on there and it really kills the power.
You will also need custom headers. Lemons Headers makes a beautiful set for about $800 that clear better than any other I've tried.

RickD Jul 21st, 03, 05:14 AM Jody, is there a website for Lemmon's?
I'm at a short list now of Stahl, Ed's and, now, Lemmon's.
Thanks.
67 Prostreet Jul 21st, 03, 05:27 AM Gentleman,
I recently read where someone actually turned the wiper motor upside down to gain the clearence that was needed for a tall deck block. Might give it a try to save a few pennies?
Best of luck,
Tom

Definitely a nice unit, but so are the others on your list. I was amazed how well his fit with the raised exhaust ports I had. They should have been tighter than a stock engine set at the steering box, but I had a lot more room. That's when I learned that the other guys just didn't do a great job of designing theirs. His even fit with the big block in the small block location, which moves the engine even closer to the box!

coach420 Jul 21st, 03, 07:09 AM This past weekend on Horespower TV they installed this motor in a 70 Nova. They mentioned hood clearance as well as header clearance at the steering box. They plan on swapping out the power steering box for manual steering. Good luck with the install! smile.gif
67RS502 Jul 21st, 03, 07:52 AM Use a K&N extreme top with their 2" air filter. I fit this set up with 2 ~ 1" spacers
on a Dart intake, with a 4" cowl hood. The tops add alot of cfm, and give it a straight
shot in to the carb too.
camcojb Jul 21st, 03, 08:06 AM Nobody can argue with the performance of your cars! The key to your combo for him is the 4" cowl; it never would have fit with the stock cowl hood.

67RS502 Jul 21st, 03, 08:48 AM I was just makin the point that with a K&N top you can run a short 2" air filter, still get
plenty of airflow, and gain clearance over a 4" tall filter - on any hood style.
I assume that a GM cowl hood is about 2", so minus my 2 ~ 1" spacers my set up should
fit under a stock GM cowl hood (if its 2" shorter then mine) ... thats all.
And a drop base too - just throwin some ideas at him that have helped me stuff all that
under my hood. :D
camcojb Jul 21st, 03, 10:10 AM I think the stock cowl is 1.5" tall. Plus he's running a tall block, not a standard height big block. So he's about 3" different than you. Even with the spacers eliminated, he's in trouble unless he changes the hood.
One other option (although expensive) is to convert to EFI; if he uses the same height manifold he'll 1"+ due to the throttle body being shorter than a carb.

Eric68 Jul 21st, 03, 11:59 AM Whatcha ya gonna do with all that torque? :D What kind of tires do you use so I can buy stock?
Seriously, That 572 is a grunt motor better matched to a heavier car, but that is just my opinion. I say this because I have real trouble getting my little 383 to hook, and cannot imagine trying to get a 572 to stick. Now if you planned on tubbing it, and a 4 link . . . :D :D
X-22 Pilot Jul 22nd, 03, 08:20 AM thanks all for the info...I've been busy so I didn't get to respond earlier.
