I just got a 350 RS/SS and was driving it around, all seemed fine until I stopped at a light and put it in first. It's now stuck there. Has a Hurst shifter, if that helps. Does not seem like a clutch problem.

View Full Version : New guy help! Stuck in gear! heyatomicdave Jun 20th, 08, 02:20 PM I just got a 350 RS/SS and was driving it around, all seemed fine until I stopped at a light and put it in first. It's now stuck there. Has a Hurst shifter, if that helps. Does not seem like a clutch problem. SunnyZ28 Jun 20th, 08, 02:29 PM Not that my advice should be taken.. hah.. but did you try to force it out of gear? I had mine stuck in third when I was driving and I had to put a lot of pressure on it to come out.. then my grandfather went and adjusted some stuff and played around and it's never done it since [he works at a transmission shop].. I have no idea what he did though.. I can find out ace's68 Jun 20th, 08, 02:29 PM Go under the car and pull the linkage to pop it out of gear. has worked for me. I believe this is called torque lock. I'd adjust your linkage aswell... heyatomicdave Jun 20th, 08, 02:47 PM I'll go give it a shot. Thanks. Hatman Jun 20th, 08, 02:53 PM Go under the car and pull the linkage to pop it out of gear. has worked for me. I believe this is called torque lock. I'd adjust your linkage aswell... Make sure the parkbrake is on and works before you do this!!! heyatomicdave Jun 20th, 08, 02:55 PM Hey thanks alot! I'm not sure if I pulled the linkage, but I pulled something (insert humor here) and it came out of gear. This site rocks! Eric Kammerer Jun 20th, 08, 03:03 PM Dave, you're going to want to search here for "linkage adjust" or something similar, as the procedure to correctly adjust things has been discussed. Your problem may be in the adjustment of the linkage or the shifter, or it could be incorrect pieces either place, or it could be that the shifter is flat wore out. I had a Muncie and Muncie shifter in my 67 in high school that was worn out and would jam like that. That's why I picked a TKO for the car I am doing now :) heyatomicdave Jun 20th, 08, 03:32 PM Yeah, it just did it again so something ain't right. At least it sticks in a gear that I can make it home in. I will search for the linkage adjust and see if I can fix it. JimM Jun 20th, 08, 05:28 PM ya, she's sticking in 2 gears at the same time. Get under there and check all the bushings in the linkage, and then adjust the linkage rods properly. pdq67 Jun 21st, 08, 07:27 AM You use a 1/4" or a 5/16" drill bit as a dowel through the hole in the bottom of the main body of the shifter to set the neutral position and then adjust the arms accordingly! Do this to your shifter and imho, it will be FINE unless it is FLAT worn out which I really doubt! And clean and lube her up GOOD too... My "snoopy art"....................... "I for one LIKE my Muncie shifter!! I have two, year '67's too.. I just set it's H pattern up so that I lead second to third and vice-versa coming back down like this... "Snoopy Art" a coming!! ........I... /.. ........./...I. Get my point?? AND this is a "feelie" thing too......... Take's all of five minutes to do with the tranny hooked up to the shifter on the cross member on the floor.................. It only take's like a thread or maybe a thread and a half adjustment on the link "nuts" to set a Muncie shifter up like this and if it is clean and lubed good, it will shift FINE, imho!!" And I'd install new steel bushings in here as well as the pigtailed little clip springs while you are at it. pdq67 He, He!! heyatomicdave Jun 24th, 08, 09:21 AM Woohoo! I fixed it. At least I hope I did. It shifts great now and it only took me like 5 hours! I really have never worked on cars before, other than oil changes and small stuff like that, so it was fun to get it working right. Thanks again for the help. heyatomicdave Jun 24th, 08, 10:16 PM Ugh. It's sticking again. It's perfectly lined up in neutral but it is still sticking in first gear. Any ideas? Barry J Jul 5th, 08, 02:24 PM My shifter kept getting stuck between second and third , I would have to get under the car and push and pull at the linkage, because on mine...the linkage would bind on itself. I'm in the middle of buying new linkage arms and probably a new shifter (Hurst)...that maybe what you would want to do. L7869 Jul 5th, 08, 02:46 PM your probelm is the adjustment on the linkage, but more important you have to change all of the bushings that go onto the shift rods, they are probably worn and sloppy. It will always get stuck in gear with bad bushings pdq67 Jul 5th, 08, 03:29 PM Back again!!
